Last month we told you
all about a Canadian folk group, The Wyrd Sisters, who were suing Warner Brothers and the group who will be playing the band during the Yule Ball scene in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It would now seem that they have secured
a November 4th court day to apply for an injunction barring distribution of the film in Canada.
The lawsuit against Warner Bros., Jarvis Cocker from Pulp and Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway of Radiohead alleges that the group in the film appears under their groups name but according to Warner Bros. there is no mention of the group’s name in the movie.
According to Warner Bros. spokesperson, Scott Rowe:
There is absolutely no name . . . for the band that is playing. They are never identified by name. We have (also) submitted sworn affidavits to the court, stating that the name Wyrd Sisters is not being used either in the film or on its soundtrack.
Warner Bros. even flew to Canada to show a copy of the movie to prove that the name Wyrd Sisters was not mentioned.
As soon as we hear more on this matter we will let you know, especially for our Canadian Harry Potter fans.

I dont think that they will get anything from it. The name isnt in the movie, so they really have no case. And if for some reason they do get the movie banned in Canada im sure that there will be a mob of angry fans after them!

Isn't all of this attention just making them more well known? Maybe they're just doing it for the attention. And the names are spelled different. It shouldn't be an issue.

Too bad for them, but they seem to be opportunistic; however, even negative publicity is publicity.

It's just another bunch of idiots trying to get rich off of other people's genious. Even if the name was mentioned, JK rowling spells it differently. But, seeing as it wasn't, they are just going to make fools of themselves.

Ok, lets be serious. JK Rowling named the "Weird Sisters" before her book was published, and I don't remember when that was, but she also had her plan for all the books since before she published the first book! I'm not exactly sure how long the "Wrd Sisters" have been around, but Jo has probably had the idea for a long time. And the Wrd Sisters have no chance of winning this suit, WB will probably prevail because of that fact. Also, (sorry, I'm not babbling!) the Wrd Sisters could have taken the name for JK Rowling, I'm not sure when they were formed, but whatever. Good Luck to Warner Brothers in the case!

Ridiculous, since WB removed any mention of the band's name from the film. Seems to me they're just pulling a publicity stunt, but considering the popularity of HP, this may just well backfire on them.

That band is being a little out of control. If they had had a problem with J.K. Rowling using that name, then wouldnt they have gotten upset years ago, when the book came out? things to ponder

"But The Wyrd Sisters have said the battle is about fairness, not publicity.
"I really feel that morally we have the right to own our name and we have a right to go about our business without interference," lead singer Kim Baryluk told Chart magazine in September.
The Wyrd Sisters have announced that they are set to release a new CD and launch a tour in the near future.
Above quoted from the Macleans.ca report.
How convenient that the Wyrd Sisters are set to launch a tour and CD soon. Obviously a cash and publicity grab. Pathetic.

This is absolutely ridiculous... WBs says the name is not even being used, but so what if they were using it? How is that going to hurt the Wyrd Sisters in anyway? If anything it will help them. Kids would see the movie and think the Weird Sisters are cool! And it's a name from the book, it's not like WBs set out to steal their name.

Money grab....it's not like most of us outside of Winnipeg where this unheard of folk band before this story broke. If it's like WB says and there's no name mentioned, this should be a no-brainer for the courts.

As an afterthought- I wonder if the group had already planned the CD release prior to all of this nonsense or came up with the plan to take advantage of the publicity? My thoughts are probably the latter.

WB will win the case hands down. Those people have no way of winning. And if they do win, they will be public enemy number one is Canada. And everyone will go to the U.S. to see the movie. So then the government will be angry. They will be hated by all around them, so either way they lose.

This is incredibly pathetic! The band that JK wrote about was "Weird Sisters" not "Wryd Sisters".That folk band should get it through their thick heads and stop trying to start controversy to publicize their "unheard of band". I'll be damned if GoF is banned from Canada because I swear I will start a petition or down right even go across the border to see this movie!
Thank you.
