There is good news for Canadian fans awaiting the release of the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Last week we reported the Wyrd Sisters, a Winnepeg folk band, filed a legal motion in attempt to block the film's release in Canada. However, reports now indicate
that the motion has just been dismissed by the Ontario Superior Court.
Thanks to Jen for the tip.
UPDATE: Additional reports
indicate that not only was this motion dismissed, but the entire case against Warner Bros., et al. According to Justice Colin Campbell:
I am not satisfied that the fact of three musicians appearing in the film will operate as a deception to the public such as to affect the goodwill that the plaintiffs may have in the term, 'The Wyrd Sister'.
Neither am I satisfied that the six-second inclusion of the scene in question will cause irreparable harm.

Hey that's great news to hear! Thank goodness that that case is now taken care of. (And I would have found it hard to believe that the singing group could get away with it. :P)

I wonder if the band even existed before JK created them in the books? Any one know. I think they just wanted money, or were trying to get some pulicity. Well, the succeeded in the later.

Okay, first off, did they ever read the books?
Im sure they did, because they know who the Weird Sisters are.
So why didnt they say anything about it before?

This whole thing was so utterly insane. Like people are going to like this group now that they almost had the release banned in Canada-good move. I swear, if anything it would have been good for them. Like anyone is going to mistake a folk band for the band that the Wierd Sisters is supposed to be. What a complete waste of money!!! And Warner Bros tried to give them money for it...even though they really didnt deserve it. They are just greedy and foolish - sorry...that really made me mad!

Well that just what I expected. Thank goodness the judge was sensible, how could their bands name being in a blockbuster film be a bad thing for them???

Good this was an incredibly stupid move on their part anyway. Even if their name sounds the same, it has nothing to with Harry Potter. I can almost see where they're coming from except that I don't see how they can claim 40 million dollars worth of damage, I had never even heard of this band before the law suit. Unless we're counting the weird sisters in Goblet of Fire of course.
