There is good news for Canadian fans awaiting the release of the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Last week we reported the Wyrd Sisters, a Winnepeg folk band, filed a legal motion in attempt to block the film's release in Canada. However, reports now indicate
that the motion has just been dismissed by the Ontario Superior Court.
Thanks to Jen for the tip.
UPDATE: Additional reports
indicate that not only was this motion dismissed, but the entire case against Warner Bros., et al. According to Justice Colin Campbell:
I am not satisfied that the fact of three musicians appearing in the film will operate as a deception to the public such as to affect the goodwill that the plaintiffs may have in the term, 'The Wyrd Sister'.
Neither am I satisfied that the six-second inclusion of the scene in question will cause irreparable harm.

Thank goodness. That was the most ridiculous lawsuit I'd ever heard of (actually it's tied with Spike Lee suing Spike TV for stealing his name). These people have such egos. Not everything is named after you!

I'm so glad the judge tossed out their case. Ridiculous! They probably named themselves after the Weird Sisters anyhow (just kidding! No one sue me, please!) after reading book 4 for themselves. Who knows?

Fantastic. I am glad to see the courts did not hold this up. There was clearly no possible confusion. I think WB was generous to offer a payment in the first place when none was required. Great News!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great! However, I think everybody would have known the answer to this problem already. The case was too weak, and they had nothing to gain from this, except some attention.

Okay...so apparently "Wyrd Sisters" was an animated movie, a book by Terry Pratchett, and a group of 8 women who write futuristic/sci-fi/paranormal/time-traveling romance novels (now THAT'S weird).
I didn't see any of them getting sued.

The issue is not whether Warner Bros or the whole Harry Potter franchise is bigger than them but justice. If they have a good reason to sue - go for it but they had no cause to sue.
All they had to do was do a google on "wyrd sister" with or without s or "weird sisters" on the net and there are so many. Question, why weren't they sued????? Some of them even have the same spelling.

That is good. If they banned Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in Canada because of that, it would have been totally stupid and Canada would have a lot of angry people on its hands. I am glad that good sense prevailed in the end!!

HA! I knew that the case would get thrown out before it got to far. Though I got to admit I'm surprised it even passed the case review and was considered to actually be a case. They (the band) can't do anything about it anyways, because someone told me the band's name is not even mentioned in the movie. Also J.K. did have it written in GoF...

Oh, good. I mean, just because they (almost) share a name with a FICTIONAL band (read: F-I-C-T-I-O-N-A-L) does not give anyone any excuse to ban the movie of the year. Humph.
