In a debate on literature and the curriculum famous authors such as Harry Potter author JK Rowling and Philip Pullman have created
lists of books that all pupils should read. At the top of Ms. Rowling's list are Wuthering Heights and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Their lists were published in the yearly issue of Royal Society of Literature magazine
.
Anthony Gardner, editor of the magazine said:
My impression is that when you are recommending books for children there are books that have stood the test of time and are always going to be popular ... but inevitably people are always going to want to make an effort to keep children in touch with what is being written at the moment.

From Rowling's list I've only read 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' but there are others that are a must:
- 'Of Mice and Men' (John Steinbeck)
- 'Macbeth' (Shakespeare)
- 'Witches' (Roald Dahl)

I approve JKR's booklist to be something of the sort of books I would want to read, and I also agree strongly with what Anthony Gardner said about books that have stood the test of time. I think its good to have a mixture of different books from different times.

Those are all good cooks that she chose! She really does create a good name for herself, doesn't she, by doing charity work and book recommendations and all this other stuff. Good for her!

Yea, I heard those books before, they sound super. I think I'm going to take a few after I finish rereading OotP and HBP. I also like Gone with the wind as a classical. But maybe its a bit too werid for her and not suitable for students. Lots of those on my fave books though. =D

I haven't read Catch-22 and The Tale of Two Bad Mice yet. But since Rowling advised them I think I might make a trip to my library very soon.

Those are some excellent choices; Charlie is the epitome of a children's novel, Animal Farm, reserved, I think for older students, a model social novel . . .in addition she's got down classics which have stood the test of time. The only thing that I would add is "A Midsummer's Night Dream" because that is Shakespeare comedy at its finest, and for the most part it is even accessible to those just starting secondary school.
