In a debate on literature and the curriculum famous authors such as Harry Potter author JK Rowling and Philip Pullman have created
lists of books that all pupils should read. At the top of Ms. Rowling's list are Wuthering Heights and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Their lists were published in the yearly issue of Royal Society of Literature magazine
.
Anthony Gardner, editor of the magazine said:
My impression is that when you are recommending books for children there are books that have stood the test of time and are always going to be popular ... but inevitably people are always going to want to make an effort to keep children in touch with what is being written at the moment.

Nice choices. I've read Wuthering Heights, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Catch-22, The Catcher in the Rye, and Hamlet. I love them all. Wuthering Heights in particular is one of my very favorite books, and Hamlet is my favorite Shakespeare play.
To Kill a Mockingbird is very standard reading for American schools, but interestingly I've never actually had to read it... I should read it one day though, I feel like I'm missing out.
So Philip Pullman made a list too? I'll have to check that out, he's fantastic. I recommend the His Dark Materials series to anyone who hasn't read it. Particularly if you're a Harry/Hermione shipper, as Will/Lyra is pretty much everything we wanted H/HR to be. :D
