In a debate on literature and the curriculum famous authors such as Harry Potter author JK Rowling and Philip Pullman have created
lists of books that all pupils should read. At the top of Ms. Rowling's list are Wuthering Heights and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Their lists were published in the yearly issue of Royal Society of Literature magazine
.
Anthony Gardner, editor of the magazine said:
My impression is that when you are recommending books for children there are books that have stood the test of time and are always going to be popular ... but inevitably people are always going to want to make an effort to keep children in touch with what is being written at the moment.

Ive read all those books and believe she has chosen wisley but i wonder where her books are because i would deffinatly put her books up the top, but of course putting your own books up there seems a bit big headed, still her books rock!

I tried to read Wuthering Heights. I got half way, but I am planning on going back to it in the future.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and To Kill a Mockingbird are the only ones that I have read through, sadly. However, I have read some of Salinger's other works.

I have read a few of those books. Catch 22 is funny and a bit hard to follow. I am going to pick it up again once I get over to the library. I bet the Harry Potter series will stand "the test of time". I know it will with me.

Great job JO! These are great.. It's fantastic that she lists this stuff. I like the fact that these books are such old, great litterature. I think that the people who don't like her *tsk tsk* may take a bit of blame off of her.

Ew..I don't think anyone should be forced to read Wuthering Heights. It just wasn't good. Although all the rest are quite pleasant. I loved To Kill a Mockingbird. I really liked Animal Farm as well.

So why is people boycotting Animal Farm? It was a wonderful book, and showed how communism doesn't really work in a large society. I have to agree with JKR those are all very good books and ones that all students should read.
