Warner Bros. today confirmed what several entertainment and fan sites reported recently: that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be opening in theatres July 13, 2007.
Earlier, sources told us the date was targeted but that Warner Bros. had not absolutely committed to it. Targeting a release date is not uncommon, as it gives the studios and their competitors a chance to stake a claim for opening weekends (and who wants to go up against a Harry Potter movie?). In many cases, a targeted date becomes the official date.
Admittedly, this doesn't bode well for the popular fan speculation that book 7 will be released 07/07/07, unless WB and the Potter book publishers don't care about such a close release window. Still, producer David Heyman promised recently that the first teaser trailer will be out later this year.
Update: WB has since confirmed several international release dates.

Kudos for Warner Brothers for taking the time to confirm the July'07 'rumor', now if only JKR would let us know what her plan is as far as when book 7 will be released!

That could put a lot of pressure on everyone involved - and maybe the end result of the movie will be affected by early assumptions, and stuff like this. I reckon it might have been better to wait - but WB always has a reason for this stuff! They aren't rash, especially not with Harry Potter.

Yow! I have to say I'm disappointed by this news, sorta. I was hoping for the 7/7/07 release of Book 7, actually, and now I think there's no way we'll see that happening. It's just too, too much. I don't think WB would risk muddying things with a release date less than a week after the last book in the series was slated to be released. Either WB has some sort of insider knowledge of the book release date (that it's not going to be ready for 7/7/07), or they may have just screwed things up for the book publishers!
I think most of us want a lot of time to read and mull Book 7 over before getting into anything else. I'm sure everthing will be much more spaced out than that. It's one thing to try to ride the coattails of the frenzy of a book release and quite another to try to do it with the last book of the HP series! I definitely don't want both OotP and Book 7 released anywhere near each other. I love the build up for the books most, but the movie premieres are fun too and I think I might die from all that excitement!
