Last month we told you that Harry Potter actors Julie Walters
and Rupert Grint's
film Driving Lessons
would be screened at this year's Tribeca Film Festival in New York, which runs from April 5th through May 7th. You can now see a snippet
from the film on the festival's web site.
The synopsis of the film reads:
Ben (Rupert Grint) is a shy teenager living in London and trying to escape from the clutches of his religious mother (Laura Linney). He finally gets his chance when he meets a retired actress who whisks him off to Edinburgh, where he learns to drive, dance, and pick up girls. Brock's loosely autobiographical coming-of-age tale is a heartwarming treat.
The movie will be showing on April 30th, May 1st and May 6th, with tickets costing $12 each. Please go here
to book your tickets or to read additional information about the festival.

Oooh, this film seems very good. I really like both Julie Walters and Laura Linney, both very good actresses. And of course, our Rupert is in it as well. I'm looking forward to seeing him in another film as I think he's a very good actress but that he doesn't get the chance to use it fully in the HP films.

Cool! I'm glad that Rupert is doing other movies it means we might still see him lots after Harry Potter films stop! I've just seen the trailer and it looks quite good but the little bit I saw seems quite sad as he gets rejected by a girl from being 'too weird' poor Rupert! I can hear you saying 'It's just a film' but it's still a shame! Better luck in the future with girls (even if they are just in films!). I hope to be able to see that film soon too it seems pretty good!

I have to say I have never been more stunned. Rupert's acting shows no promise what so ever in the Harry Potter series. The way he delivers his lines is mundane and monotone. He doesn't variate the words to better suit their presence and meaning as much as he should and his expressions are always of the same character. So needless to say he's the least I expected seeing any of after the series, even when I heard the film also stared my beloved Laura Linney and Julie Walters who should have a boatload of Oscars and BAFTA's under her belt.
Then I saw this clip....now granted it's only a clip and probably about 2% of the film, but it's incredible. His overall work is amazing. You actually feel for the character as he's shot down, and the poem sounds like something the character he created in those few seconds would write. His eyes never betrayed me and the voice was so simple yet so resounding. Granted it was still too mumbly, but it showed much more promise.....I'm quite literally floored and am eagerly awating the film.

Sounds interesting. Don't know if it's my sort of film, but at least he's found another script to do. It means he'll have less trouble when the HP series is finished.

thereturnoftheking, your post is exactly what I was waiting for. Those who think Rupert cannot act but be pleasently surprised by what they learn. This was only a small tidbit, but Rupert does more powerful stuff in this and I think more and more people are going to realize how wonderful of an actor he is. I mean, his film is going to The Cannes. If that doesn't say something what will?
That said, if you like what you saw here, you should try and see Thunderpants. Not for the movie because it's nothing spetacular, but for Rueprt's acting. The boy is absolutely amazing. He even changes the sound of his voice! Believe me, you will have a whole new respect for Rupert and wonder why the HP films keep him down so much.
