"Is quidditch the worst fake sport ever?" Popular (15724)

In an odd column complaining about football commentary in the UK, the author asks the question "Is quidditch the worst fake sport ever?"

While watching the latest Harry Potter movie, the author questions the rules of the game; its popularity in the wizarding world and sportsmanship.

The author equatesopens in new window quidditch to basketball and the worthlessness of the game:

Running simultaneously are: a version of basketball, where players are required to punt a ball called a quaffle through various hoops; a perversion of the kind of bodyline swingball favoured by hyperactive 10-year-old boys, where the aim is simply to whack one of two balls called bludgers at your opponent; and the search for a tiny flying ball called the Golden Snitch, which must be captured for the game to end, and is worth an instant and wildly disproportionate 150 points.

So to clarify, I am required to keep my eye not simply on three balls at any one time, but also on a winged snitch (which is virtually invisible to anyone in the crowd anyway), the capture of which almost without exception renders the preceding however many minutes or hours entirely worthless.

I would like to see him try to catch the snitch!

And you aren't paying attention to all of the balls all the time. You concentrate on the one that affects you the most and rely on your team mates to watch your back and vis versa.

I think that Quidditch is an excellent combination of all the sports played in the "Muggle" world. Praise should be given to Jo for inventing Quidditch as well as one of the most amazing, heroic, inspirational, epic stories written in the last 15 years.

The person quoted in the article really doesn't see the point of this great TEAM sport. It says that person has to keep their eyes on at least three balls plus the golden snitch, but in reality everyone on the team has their part in making sure the game is managable and not just one person keeps an eye on all balls at once. The bludgers are managed by the beaters offensively and defensively, and the golden snitch is the responsibility of the Seeker.

I admit that the guy is a strange and unique human. .(sorry to say that). not liking Quidditch for its rules and regulations? must be unique cause I think he is the single person in the world to think so.

Well if he read the book and the description that Rowling gave to the sport, I feel that he will regret saying that. He's only judging Quiddich by how the movies have made it and the movies don't have the extra movie time to make the sport more complex.

Somehow I think the author of this has not read the books. I find it very irritating when people judge the books without having read them first. Why do people overanalyze things anyway? It's kind of pointless, because JK is not going to change it.

Hmm Baseketball. Yup, Quidditch is much better. Even the muggle version of it. I think its the best fictional sport as it does rely heavily on teamwork, which I guess is one of the messages JK is trying to get across - work together.

But anyway, Quidditch rules, and that author .....should wear himself as a hat. Bah!

Quidditch! Quidditch! Quidditch!!!!

Well I agree abt the 150 points thing when it should be 10 or 5. But why would any sane person really abt the rules of a fictional game needs to get life if that's the only things he can argue about. thats so sad....hmm.

I'm really sorry.. Mr."Author",
but Quiddich is in fact ingenius
and it is all about magic.
The fact that the snitch is worth so much
makes the Seeker (Harry) so valuable
and gives hope to everyone in the crowd
whether the team is losing or winning.
Because flying covers a lot of distance
in short time, being required to catch something
that is almost invisible to end the game
is quite reasonable.
I, once again, praise Jo's ingeniusness and creativity.

I think Quiddich is ingenius, i never in my wildest dreams would ever be able to think of something like that. I suppose this is just one editor's views, i don't think he's directly bashing Quiddich, just giving more of a humerous statement.

I can't undersatnd why he said that 'many minutes or hours of playing are entirely worthless' after caughting the Golden Snitch, if the Irish (i don't know if i wrote it right) team won even if Bolgarian seeker caugth the snitch!!
So in that case the game didn't bacame worthless after caughting the snitch, because even 150 points didn't help Bolgarian team to deefet (i don't know how to write it---->to be better) the Irish team.
