A challenge to remove all of JK Rowling's Harry Potter books from the library shelves of Gwinnett Public Schools in Georgia has failed
.
The school board there voted Thursday to keep the books available. It was the final action for a petition that began in November and culminated at an April clash
in which nearly 100 people attended to voice their opinions.
Laura Mallory, a parent of three children at an elementary school in the district, argued that the books encouraged witchcraft and demonic activity. It was later revealed that she had never read the books. School board officials said the process for determining the series' suitability was unbiased, and they sought mainly to decide if the books were obscene or not.
Still, removing the books would have opened the school system to "ridicule by many of its citizens as well as citizens of the nation," Su Ellen Bray told the Gwinnett Daily Post.

There are other alternatives to solve the *cough* suppposed Harry Potter Problem. They can A.) Tell their children not to read them. B.) Make parents sign a Harry Potter release form C.) Take it up with Voldey and D.) Stop hating on the literacy of their children, just because they have never read a book as long as HP.

Good! I am so sick of these people trying to take down Potter without having given the books a shot yet. And if you remember from other articles on this, she had never read the books before because they were "long." I think she is just lazy.

I did a critical study of Harry potter in year 11. My teacher thought the book was evil haha (I go to a religious school) but she still taught it.
I'm really not surprised the person had never read the books, anyone who has can see that they are just entertainment

Oh boy. No offence to them but just try to regard it as fiction. When James Frey author of A Million Little Pieces admitted to his book not being total fiction people stopped reading it. My comment is just to regard things such as this as fiction.

That makes me so mad when people judge the books, and haven't even read them. What an idiot. Thank you to the school board for making the right decision.

I go to school in the Gwinnett district and I have been praying they wouldn't ban them! And I think the entire thing is sort of dumb. If Luara Mallory hasn't even read the books then how wuld she know anything about them!

I'm very glad this school board didn't vote to ban the books. It would have been especially silly, considering one of the main protesters never even read the books. That seems to be the way it is, people protesting something they don't even know about themselves.

That's so stupid. Harry Potter is fiction and you can't go making claims about a book you haven't even read. I think that person just made a fool of themselves.

How stupid that Laura Mallory thought the books encouraged witchcraft and Demonic activity. I love the HP books but I don't feel the need to brew up potions and talk to the devil. Obviously she had never read the book otherwise she would know that the books have magic in them but the main story is about a young boy who has lost his family and is trying to survive himself. Magic is just an added bonus.

Pfft is she never read them, she has no idea. They're not 'demonic' as she would say. Sure magic is a theme, and a vital theme, but there's also friendship, love, discrimination, and fighting for what's right (not easy). And plus if she banned it, that would just make the entire population want to read it! Just like the Da Vinci code.

Uh, do they think we're stupid or something? We know the difference between fiction and non- fiction. To think that someone out in the world wants to deprive kids from the joys of reading the Harry Potter books sends shivers down my spine!

I'm so glad that school districts are seeing the ridiculous nature of parents' claims like this and are standing up for what's right. I am a teacher, and although I teach a younger grade, I know that my principal supports and stands up for Harry Potter. She said, "Anything that can get 5th and 6th grade boys excited about reading, is okay with me!"
It just sickens me, the number of "Potter haters" who have never even cracked open the pages of a Harry Potter book. What hypocrites!
I read an excellent book called Looking For God in Harry Potter by John Granger that I think all these conservatives should read. This book was written by a conservative who initially thought Harry Potter was bad, but after reading it, completely changed his opinion.
I think these people should also should read a Harry Potter book before deciding whether or not it's "evil"!

Don't know why, People hate Harry Potter Books so much?
It is the pass, where they talked so much about the evil witches and wizards, that got the world in an uproar.
This People, of Witches and Wizards or Sorcerer's are just a tale and should not be used to disturb the world from relaxing to another world for a while...like the world of Harry Potter.
I prefer the World of Harry Potter, than a ruff 9 to 5 and that is only to pay bills.
