School board cements 'Potter' position Popular (8102)

A challenge to remove all of JK Rowling's Harry Potter books from the library shelves of Gwinnett Public Schools in Georgia has failedopens in new window.

The school board there voted Thursday to keep the books available. It was the final action for a petition that began in November and culminated at an April clashopens in new window in which nearly 100 people attended to voice their opinions.

Laura Mallory, a parent of three children at an elementary school in the district, argued that the books encouraged witchcraft and demonic activity. It was later revealed that she had never read the books. School board officials said the process for determining the series' suitability was unbiased, and they sought mainly to decide if the books were obscene or not.

Still, removing the books would have opened the school system to "ridicule by many of its citizens as well as citizens of the nation," Su Ellen Bray told the Gwinnett Daily Post.

Don't know why, People hate Harry Potter Books so much?

It is the pass, where they talked so much about the evil witches and wizards, that got the world in an uproar.

This People, of Witches and Wizards or Sorcerer's are just a tale and should not be used to disturb the world from relaxing to another world for a while...like the world of Harry Potter.

I prefer the World of Harry Potter, than a ruff 9 to 5 and that is only to pay bills.

How ignorant... to judge before researching the entire issue. I do hope that she doesn't pass that to her three children.

That mother is so pathetic. i can't believe that she would try to criticize something she didn't know anything about about nor even took the time to learn. harry potter is not the reason the world is in such a bad state....it's stupid people like her that are the problem.

Well good for them.. that would have been terrible.. depriving people of Harry??

And please man.. have something to back up your argument.. this usually involves reading the material to know whether or not its suitable.. I'm so sick of all these accusations from people who don't actually know anything about it..

Oh my god, how silly can you get? She might want to read the books and know the facts of something she is making such a big deal of. They are brilliant books, but that's all they are, books. Not a guide to witchcraft or magic or anything like that.
My school library had American Psycho, which I think is a lot worse.

I am so frustrated by the number of people that claim the HP books are demonic or encourage witchcraft without ever reading the books. Seriously, the only true "witch craft" that happens in the book is Prof. Trelawny and her failed attempts at tealeave reading, crystal ball gazing and tarrot cards - JKR makes fun of witch craft as it truly exists in the world. I'm a Christian and I don't have a problem with the books - obviously- I'm here to comment on them & learn more about future stuff. Please don't write off all Christians as crazy control freaks!

Gwinnett County is very close to where I live so I was suprised to see that they raised such an uproar at so late in the game, if they were so worried about it, why didn't they say so in the beginning? I'm willing to bet they never even read any of the books to begin with, The so called spells come from someone imagination, so whats the big deal!
