School board cements 'Potter' position Popular (8189)

A challenge to remove all of JK Rowling's Harry Potter books from the library shelves of Gwinnett Public Schools in Georgia has failedopens in new window.

The school board there voted Thursday to keep the books available. It was the final action for a petition that began in November and culminated at an April clashopens in new window in which nearly 100 people attended to voice their opinions.

Laura Mallory, a parent of three children at an elementary school in the district, argued that the books encouraged witchcraft and demonic activity. It was later revealed that she had never read the books. School board officials said the process for determining the series' suitability was unbiased, and they sought mainly to decide if the books were obscene or not.

Still, removing the books would have opened the school system to "ridicule by many of its citizens as well as citizens of the nation," Su Ellen Bray told the Gwinnett Daily Post.

How incredibly stupid. Why do people like to judge the books when they haven't even read them!?

The only concern that I would have regarding having Harry Potter books in school libraries is because of the very small risk of children not reading any other genre of books.
Once introduced into the magical Potter Universe, I think it's hard for kids to switch to other drier, classic literature.

You can tell that the women hasn't read the books, as there aren't any 'demons in it' not really, in the 'demonic' sense of the word. I cant beleive she tried to ban them, without even reading them!!!

Anyway!! Hurrah, another victory!!

People who say such things are usually the ones that have never read the books....They just follow for what other people had said!! I think this idea of "demonic activity" and "encouraged witchcraft" are totally absurd!! The books are all made up....None of them are real!! If kids think they are real, THEN they should ban the books, but people who like reading fantasies and understand their concepts, should not be punished!! These books are just like all those other fantasy novels like Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Star Wars, and so on and so forth....The list goes on!! Why can't some people understand this!?!?

It just goes to show that Harry Potter is here to stay. It was a dumb idea to try to remove it in the first place since the HP fandome will never allow them to do so.

Thank goodness the petition didn't get through and these people weren't allowed to spread their ignorance even further. I find it hilarious one of the advocates for banning the books hadn't even read ONE of them. I sure hope in today's world there will never be any book that is banned from the public.

You know, I used to not read any articles like this...but this one just caught my eye because they almost succeeded. After reading all of the books numerous of times, they have not led me to witchcraft and demomic activities. I still go to church almost every Sunday. :) AND I encourage all children who are interested to read them. One holier than thou person was stopped...thank God!

It irks me terribly when people think HP is all about evil demonic things. But, I try not to judge the people who feel that way, because we're all entitled to our own interpretation of the books.

I think that it is stupid to ban them...I really do! I am so glad that they have decided to keep them available. If anything it teaches similar morals and ethics to the bible by saying good against evil and you are widening your vocabulary and encouraging children to read. Is this such a bad thing?

I am highly glad that they have fought to keep them and have kept them! Good on them!

After all...it's ONLY FICTION!!! Hehe!

Phew! Haven't they ever heard of fiction and fantasy?

There must be millions of books about witches and wizards, and hundreds more childrens television programmes to match!

Do they say any of them are unsuitable for children to read or watch? No.

Then one question, why this series?

Thank goodness this failed. I'm tired of other people trying to dictate to others what they can read and what they can't. If you don't want your kids to read Harry Potter, then don't let them. But don't tell other they can't either. Try parenting your own kids, and leave other parents to decide what is right for their kids. Quite frankly, if these people would actually read the Harry Potter books, they might become better people. I'm just sick and tired of a small minority of uneducated fundamentalists and small-minded people trying to control the rest of us!
