A report in an Italian newspaper states
that Warner Bros. has approached small medieval towns in the Savona area (near Genoa) with the option of filming scenes for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. As with all reports on filming, please treat this as a rumor until confirmed.
A brief synposis of the article courtesy of Ilaria:
An Italian newspaper reports this morning that crew and production team members from Order of the Phoenix have been visiting a series of small medieval towns in the Savona area (near Genoa), with a view to shooting part of the movie in Italy. I don't know how reliable this is, given they're not supposed to film outside the UK... Could it be a second-unit crew?
The mayor of Balestrino (one of the small towns) says people from WB have "surveyed" the locations, but are yet to get in touch with the local administration. But they said they loved the atmosphere: this part of Italy offers breathtaking landscapes, what with both the Tirreno sea and the Alps being close by. There's also a centuries-old sanctuary to the Virgin Mary, which would make striking background scenery...
The Mayor also says WB asked him to postpone any plans of renovation and repair to the ancient buildings - apparently, they don't want building sites and scaffoldings in the movie...

Cool! Its great that part of the movie will be filmed in Italy(If rumor is true). But I think it would be better if filming stayed in the UK.

I could understand why they would want to use that local. But like the article said...they are not supposed to film outside of Great Britain. I wonder why they are?

I just read the article which stated that the director wanted BRITISH landmarks in the movie. I don't have anyting against Italy, but isn't that a little far from England? I guess if they disguse the scene well we won't be able to tell... like the scenes that was shot in Switzerland.

Honestly, that sounds a little bit sketchy to me. I specifically remember the clause about filming in the UK entirely, etc, so why would they go film in Italy? Maybe it is for a different movie and people are just confused...

That would be interesting especially as how the rumours about Turkey have turned out to be just that. But I agree that Italy has some lovely spots (from pictures) but I would think they would want something more consistent with what we have seen already. But this is, of course, still a rumour until confirmed so we will have to wait and see.

Absolutely, it seems to be at odds with the Harry Potter world as we know it! There is always a reference to other parts of the wizarding world, however in the films we rarely see it, except (Weasleys family holiday pic in Egypt-Daily Prophet PoA) Hmmm, maybe such footage might be used within the film like this???
