Rowling discusses last 'Potter' book, deaths Popular (70161)

JK Rowling appeared on the Richard & Judy Show in the UK, and had a few things to say that may interest fans.

Some highlights from the show:

  • Book 7 is NOT finished but she is well into it
  • The final chapter for book 7 has changed slightly - two more people have died than she originally planned and one other person has got a reprieve
  • Jo first wrote the final chapter in 1990
  • She has regretted writing some parts where she may have boxed herself in, earlier in the series
  • Jo says Ron is generally more popular than Harry -- remembers seeing an unofficial poll on a fansite reflecting this

You can read the rest of the highlights hereopens in new window courtesy of SnitchSeeker, but since they seem to be having server issues, here they are for now:

  • She would be willing to kill Harry in order to prevent future authors from writing sequels
  • She was in denial of her fame for the first three books, shocked when the press made slight reference to Potter
  • Jo mentioned she is indeed wealthy, but many stats are falsely reported
  • Jessica, her daughter, is often pestered at school for upcoming book titles, plot details, etc.
  • Jo has written half of another children's book in her spare time
  • Her boggart would be that of Mrs. Weasley's: her children dead
  • She made up the rules for quidditch in 30 minutes after a fight with her ex-boyfriend

UPDATE: You can see some screencaps of the video hereopens in new window courtesy of MNopens in new window. Reuters also has an articleopens in new window online with some direct quotes.

UPDATE II: You can now watchopens in new window the video of Jo's appearance on the show, thanks to Ciaran from MuggleNet.

I loved the interview! Though I don't understand Ron being more popular, I find him an annoying character. But the interview was really interesting and Jo was (as always) so nice.

I DON'T BELIVE I BLOODY MISSED IT. ARRRGGHHH

never mind

Anyone like to bet that its Harry and Voldermort (sadly)?

If anyone has to die, id prefer Ron to die. Yay! Ron to die!

If Harry does die..she could always write a book called
"Ronald Weasly and the boggart"

Yes people, I don't like Ron XD

I'm so gald there is news about the book. Hopefully it will come out next year. I don't know what to think about two more deaths though. I will be okay with Harry dying if he takes with Voldemort with him.

I am not saying that Ms. Rowling is not going to kill Harry, though I pray she does not, I believe that she has said that she can understand why an author would do that, not that she herself, IS going to do that. I don't know if she will, I think that all hopeful for whatever outcome can read what they wish for into what information is given, but I don't believe that she in fact did state that Harry is going to die.

Ok, she said two people die than originally planed, I think it will be, Ron, Snape, and Lupin. Because Ron will do anything to save Harry. Harry hates Snape. And Lupin is spying on werewolfs, and I have a feeling it's hard to get out of that one. I do hope the book is long!

Okai, I don't know if Arnold the Pygmy Puff has already posted this, but if not. We vote that JK doesn't kill Harry. Snape can go. And Cho. And a few of the owls, especially Draco's, and Percy's (cause Percy's such a git, and she could as well finish off Percy too). Also, the Weasley family owl deserves to die (It's animal abuse, keeping him alive). And kill all the budgerigars too. Apart from that, I don't want anyone to die. (Uhm, except maybe Voldemort, that is...)
JK, it's no point killing Harry just to "protect your work". People are already writing fanfics, and they won't stop just because you kill him...

Oh, now this book is going to be such a crier. I always knew it would be, but... Now I know know.

I want to read it now! Now! Now! Soon! *sigh*

Mrs. Hammerlick says:

The problem with the word play is that two more than she originally planned are going to die, that doesn't just mean two characters. That means in addition to what she already had planned. It is probably more like five or six deaths total. Definitely Voldemort, possibly Harry, more likely Snape, Hermione, Lupin, Arthur Weasley and Lucius Malfoy. One reprieve is little comfort, my guess is Ginny.

Just my opinion.

Woooo, I can't wait now. I find it odd that she's so open about talking about killing Harry when she's normally so closed lipped about a lot of things, either that means she's not going to do it and is free to speculate or she wants to give people time to realize that she's okay with doing it and she's going to do it no matter what people think.

What's with Ron being more popular than Harry? And which poll was that in (and can one really make a statement like that based on one unofficial fan poll? I don't think so). I mean, I guess I can see why Harry wouldn't be as popular in Book 5, though in the sixth book they're both terrible people! I don't think that the Ron in the movies is more popular than the Harry in the movies though.

I wonder if polls such as these influence her killing decisions?

Some good new information about Book Seven. But I was disappointed with the other questions about the series in the interview. Judy seemed like a bit of a fan and I was hoping they'd ask Jo more interesting questions. Oh well, it was still a nice show.
