Rowling discusses last 'Potter' book, deaths Popular (70161)

JK Rowling appeared on the Richard & Judy Show in the UK, and had a few things to say that may interest fans.

Some highlights from the show:

  • Book 7 is NOT finished but she is well into it
  • The final chapter for book 7 has changed slightly - two more people have died than she originally planned and one other person has got a reprieve
  • Jo first wrote the final chapter in 1990
  • She has regretted writing some parts where she may have boxed herself in, earlier in the series
  • Jo says Ron is generally more popular than Harry -- remembers seeing an unofficial poll on a fansite reflecting this

You can read the rest of the highlights hereopens in new window courtesy of SnitchSeeker, but since they seem to be having server issues, here they are for now:

  • She would be willing to kill Harry in order to prevent future authors from writing sequels
  • She was in denial of her fame for the first three books, shocked when the press made slight reference to Potter
  • Jo mentioned she is indeed wealthy, but many stats are falsely reported
  • Jessica, her daughter, is often pestered at school for upcoming book titles, plot details, etc.
  • Jo has written half of another children's book in her spare time
  • Her boggart would be that of Mrs. Weasley's: her children dead
  • She made up the rules for quidditch in 30 minutes after a fight with her ex-boyfriend

UPDATE: You can see some screencaps of the video hereopens in new window courtesy of MNopens in new window. Reuters also has an articleopens in new window online with some direct quotes.

UPDATE II: You can now watchopens in new window the video of Jo's appearance on the show, thanks to Ciaran from MuggleNet.

I dont believe the 2 additional characters that are going to die are main ones. To kill off Ron, Harry or Hermione, she would need to write a whole story around, so she cant do this so easily. Either they were meant to die from the beginning or they will live.

I thought she had said that two people would die, but two new people, that is something else. I mean, Voldemort must die, and I fear that Harry is going as well. But who else? I hope it is someone bad...

Weeee this is really getting exciting (and a bit sad that this is really the last HP book).
Aww I was afraid there might be more deaths of characters. Harry seems to be one of them. It would be nice to now find out what the title will be.

Im so excited. I can't wait for the 7th book. I think its fairly logical to kill off Harry so future authors can't carry on the series. I can't wait for the last chapter the most. Once I get the book I am going to be so tempted to just skip right to that, but I would never do it, that is just not right at all, total blastphomy! I can't wait, counting down the days to the unknown date already!

I think it's really sad that Harry will die in the 7th book. I think she should let harry kill Vold-I mean you know who and than live a happy rest of his life and die of age. It would be a shame for the Bot-Who-Lived to be [b]KILLED[/b!]

Silly Dragon says:

"prevent future authors from writing sequels"...Indeed it might feel frustrating for her to read of a character of her own in someone else's story. I doubt any writer will try to continue the story after Harry's death. I think it would be quite a shame. Concerning the 'slight changes' in the last chapter of book 7, I think she might kill the trio, yet she might have planned some other surprises. It will most probably end in a dreadful battle, that will be the occasion to delight in reading some fine magic scenes. I hope at the least that Harry will die brilliantly, after defeating Voldemort. Now if the Dursleys came to die, that would be more brilliant maybe.

To be honest, I don't know what to think. Having read the books several times now, I don't think Harry will stick his spoon in the wall prematurely, but I just don't know. I am also hoping Ron, Hermione and Ginny will come through. Of course there isn't anyone I want to see bite the dust, other than Voldemort, but a more fitting punishment for him would be to realize he is pathetic, and to be pitied.

Smiles!

That's a lot of interesting information, but I hope her notice that ron is more popular doesn't mean he'll be killed off. I don't want to see any of the trio go. I'm so gonna cry while reading this book :'-(

First of all...who is Judy? Secondly, the story of Harry Potter is about the struggle between harry and Voldemort. If Voldemort dies the story is over...there's no material for sequels. We need to remember that these are kids...17 years old. No one is going to get married except maybe Lupin and Tonks. I just can't imagine any of the trio dying. It would be so evil for JKR to do that.

yes i do believe Harry will die. And heres why because i know how annoying copy caters are in writing- such as some one might use Harry in their own novel- or mention him in some way. its exactly what happened to Jane Austen since Elizabeth bennet and Mr. Darcy where so popular people wrote their own sequels and published them or they had them as other characters in their books. As a writer it can drive you mad! So i do think Harry will be killed, but that could only be part of it.

I think that Harry will survive because the whole point of the series was for Harry to defeat Voldamort and if Voldamort dies there is no point for the series to continue i mean who else is Harry supposed to fight. cause if Harry kills Voldamort the Death Eaters will do what they did last time run of beg for forgivness and then live the rest of their lives either at home or in azkaban which is where i think they will all go.

I think all the D.A. members will come to Harry's aid with "the order of the phoenix" and then it will be Harry Vs. voldamort and the D.A. along with "The Order Of The Phoenix" Vs. death eaters, and harry's followers unable to use unforgivable curses will stupefy all the death eaters with basically a barrage of stupification spells and then harry will use that sectumsempra spell he learned from snape's book to kill lord voldamort

I think Harry will survive cause Harry couldn't possibly be a horcrux because Harry would be being controlled by the part of Voldamort inside him. and then then the prophecy clearly states that either must die at the hands of the other for neither can live while the other survives.
