Rowling discusses last 'Potter' book, deaths Popular (70514)

JK Rowling appeared on the Richard & Judy Show in the UK, and had a few things to say that may interest fans.

Some highlights from the show:

  • Book 7 is NOT finished but she is well into it
  • The final chapter for book 7 has changed slightly - two more people have died than she originally planned and one other person has got a reprieve
  • Jo first wrote the final chapter in 1990
  • She has regretted writing some parts where she may have boxed herself in, earlier in the series
  • Jo says Ron is generally more popular than Harry -- remembers seeing an unofficial poll on a fansite reflecting this

You can read the rest of the highlights hereopens in new window courtesy of SnitchSeeker, but since they seem to be having server issues, here they are for now:

  • She would be willing to kill Harry in order to prevent future authors from writing sequels
  • She was in denial of her fame for the first three books, shocked when the press made slight reference to Potter
  • Jo mentioned she is indeed wealthy, but many stats are falsely reported
  • Jessica, her daughter, is often pestered at school for upcoming book titles, plot details, etc.
  • Jo has written half of another children's book in her spare time
  • Her boggart would be that of Mrs. Weasley's: her children dead
  • She made up the rules for quidditch in 30 minutes after a fight with her ex-boyfriend

UPDATE: You can see some screencaps of the video hereopens in new window courtesy of MNopens in new window. Reuters also has an articleopens in new window online with some direct quotes.

UPDATE II: You can now watchopens in new window the video of Jo's appearance on the show, thanks to Ciaran from MuggleNet.

UPDATE III: Transcripts are now available hereopens in new window and hereopens in new window.

EEEEEE! yay! News! *does happy dance* Finally! I wonder how far along 'well into it' is.

2 more people die?! I wonder who got the reprieve! And, i wonder what she considers to have boxed herself in previously.

Sorry about the second comment, but I can't belive that she would be willing to kill harry in the seventh book!!!! She better no!!!! Yet, it is actually nice that she might be killing Harry because someauthor might want to steal her story and write more. Well, lets see what happens.

Or maybe she will write it so that the green goblin captures Gwen Stacy, right before she kills his father. When Spiderman comes to rescue her, then she is already killed, green goblin thou are evil.

Let us hope that it is only the teachers that will die: many school-boys inner dreams.
Macgonigal, Hagrid, a weasley parent or someone other.

Whoa. Two more people are dying. I am truly scared now.
Also, I think that it is very scary to think she would kill off Harry just to keep others from writing about him. That would really cheapen his death, if that were the case. I sincerely hope she wouldn't do such a thing.

Its really good to finally get some details about Book Seven. I am really hoping that she releases a title soon. I'm really glad to hear that she is well into the writing, this sounds like we can hopefully get the 2007 release we have been rooting for.

And she will.

I don't like it when she kills off so many characters! Harry needs to go though but others didn't *cough* Sirius *cough*

I do wish her luck on the final book and edits. She did start the final chapter the year I was born!!

If she kills anyone from the trio I will curse her. Where do they sell those vodoo dolls? Can't she get a patent on it or something so that other people can't write about it. And what's with the two killing extra? There's only so many main characters-hopefully it's Neville and Luna I can deal with that just not the trio.

That's really interesting. The statement about Harry can't be taken too seriously because she wouldn't give it to us that easily. I almost think it is more of an indirect confirmation that Harry won't die.

It sounds as though JK is progressing well with book 7, I do hope that she doesnt kill off any of the main characters, I know it would seem like an easy way to protect her storyline, but I think it would be terrible if HP died.

Okay, I always thought Harry would die, but her saying that now makes me think he WON'T die. She's probably only saying that to make people think he'll die, then she'll surprise everyone.
Well, I hope Harry doesn't die. I love Harry. Kill Ron. He annoys me greatly. He acts like a real brat sometimes.

I wonder how many deaths were originally planned. I'm guessing more than one. And now 2 more. I definitely think one of the Weasleys, besides Ron, will die. Can't wait for the book. It'll be great even if she kills off everyone(except Harry)

Oooh it was so good! Robyn almost forgot! Erm..anyhoo..this one girl, said she had read all the books, but to explain a boggart, she said something along the lines of..'When you say a spell in front a cupboard, it comes out and turns into the thing you're most scared of.'
Well, the end is right, but..the beginning..we think she just saw the films. And, a boy who admitted he hadn't read the books!!

MWbashfulAR says:

Okay, in light of what Rowling said about the reprieve, let me post the following --

Reprieve: A pardon is the forgiveness of a crime and the penalty associated with it. It is granted by a sovereign power, such as a monarch. Clemency is an associated term which is the lessening of the penalty of the crime without forgiving the crime itself. The act of clemency is a reprieve. Today, pardons and reprieves are granted in many countries when individuals may have been wrongly convicted of a crime or have demonstrated that they have fulfilled their debt to society.

I think we can all be certain that the only person who fits this description perfectly is Snape. I think Rowling has assured us all that we are correct in thinking he is still batting for the good side.

Oh my gosh, this is so exciting! Lots of book 7 details! It is sad to think about those two more deaths. I really hope it's not Harry, Ron, or Hermione, but that's just wishful thinking. I do think that one of them may be killed off. Anyhow, I'm still excited about the last book (it's one of those bitter/sweet situations).

And I hope she doesn't kill Harry just so future authors wouldn't write sequels to HBP. I don't know about most other people, but I would never read an HP book written by another author! It wouldn't be the same...

I wonder what she regrets writing into the books...
