Earlier in the week we let you know
that director M. Night Shyamalan
had been offered the first Harry Potter movie, which he declined due to other film commitments. In a recent interview, when asked about 'Potter' he adds
that he would be the "greatest protector" of JK's work, would choose the last movie if given a choice of which of the movies to direct and that passing on the first movie still "haunts him."
Shyamalan was interviewed by TLC and you can read a snippet from the interview below:
I would be the greatest protector of an author's stuff. Especially things that I respect, that I know there's inherently magic in it. I would be very wary of screwing it up, so I would be very careful....There's no way that it would be missed by lack of effort or lack of care or lack of attention. I would be giving it every single iota...I would cherish it.
You will be able to listen
to the full interview when it is released on Sunday.

Regardless of the fact that he says he would protect JK's work, I don't know if he would do a very good job at this movie. I mean, he's done some good work and some really bad work from what I've heard. And I don't know if his style would be good for Harry Potter!

If he's not going to screw it up, then let him do it. Heck, if it's good, let him re-do the others. they were all terrible...

See I am totally not a Shyamalan fan, but somehow I take him at his word on this. It's almost like he is ribbing the previous directors cause they missed so much huh? I don't know, maybe him directing an HP movie would be a good thing??

Sounds like he really wants to direct this movie. I hope he does. He has made many great movies before so I hope they'll accept him.

THe thing i like about him is that he says he will protect JKR's work. Hopefully it goes for 5 hours. That was one of the things i didn't like about PoA, Alfonza changed a fair bit of it around.

I think that he could not have done a better job on the first two films than Christopher Columbus. Whether MNS can do a good job on the remaining films is a different question, but given the differing results of the films, I think it is a shame that more than one director has been used throughout the series of films.

I wonder how different the movies would have been with M. Night Shyamalan as the director. I have always loved his films, and might be more interested in the Hp movies...

I can't believe it still haunts him to have rejected making the Potter movie. I hope he can un-regret it (haha) by being offered a later movie. Though hopefully all this cherishment will produce a great movie :P

Now I really would have wanted him to have directed the first movies. He would have been perfect. But maybe he could do the last movie. I don't know. Its really a shame that he passed up the chance of doing the first. I guess it'll haunt him for a long time to come.

I think that he would be a great director. He's very good with character development which is something we need to see more of in the movies. I also think he would follow the book better than any of the other directors. He should direct HBP and HP7! :)

I can't believe some of you don't like Night's work. I think he is an amazing director and would really understand and bring to the HP movies what they have been lacking. Speaking as a director myself, WB could not make a better choice, in my opinion.

I don't know why, but I trust him when he says that. In addition, I am now convinced that he would be a perfect director for the last film. His style is completely differnt to all the other directors so far, and he has an uncanny flair for surprises and twists, which are inherent to HP.

Ohh... I wish he had taken it - but I still have to stay, I'm happy with what Columbus did with CoS. Honestly, I didn't like SS. I mean, it was okay, but I dunno. I guess it was still pretty good. I'd rather if they gave Shyamalan HBP first, see how he does, and if it's, like, SPECTACULAR, then gove him the last film to do. He sounds like he respects JK's work.

I haven't seen Lady in the Water yet, but I respect Shyamalan soooo much for saying that he'd be the "greatest protector of an author's stuff." I think that accuracy to the books AND artistic expression are crucial in any film, and if one or the other is neglected the film is somewhat dissatisfying. So far, my favorite films are probably the fourth and the second. The third had great cinematography, but left out alot. I resented them not mentioning who the Marauders actually were. So now, in the fifth film, fans who only see the movies will finally realize who they are in the Snape's Worst Memory scene. :) Yes!

I think he would do awesome. There are very few directors who say that they would protect an author's work...
