Earlier in the week we let you know
that director M. Night Shyamalan
had been offered the first Harry Potter movie, which he declined due to other film commitments. In a recent interview, when asked about 'Potter' he adds
that he would be the "greatest protector" of JK's work, would choose the last movie if given a choice of which of the movies to direct and that passing on the first movie still "haunts him."
Shyamalan was interviewed by TLC and you can read a snippet from the interview below:
I would be the greatest protector of an author's stuff. Especially things that I respect, that I know there's inherently magic in it. I would be very wary of screwing it up, so I would be very careful....There's no way that it would be missed by lack of effort or lack of care or lack of attention. I would be giving it every single iota...I would cherish it.
You will be able to listen
to the full interview when it is released on Sunday.

I hope he doesn't direct only the last movie but Half-Blood Prince as well. He has the true spirit and he says he would protect JK's work.

That's what I'm talking about. All the directors are like "I'm focusing on being faithful to the books" um...then show it!
I really want Shaymalan to direct the 6th film.

Oh oh oh! It sounds like he's appealing to do the last movie. I would love to see him do it. He's a brilliant director. There's a lot of pressure around doing it though.... a tough precedence to follow.

I think the last two especially the 7th movie should be directed by someone great. Either Speilburg or Shamalan.

Some of M. Night Shyamalan movies are freaky! Like "signs." that was kind of awkward...it was okay, but awkward. I remember that when I was watching "Goblet of Fire" his "Lady in the Water" preview was played and someone in the back of the theatre was like "No one's going to watch that!" Hopefully if he directs the 7th, it would be amazing! It's kind of hard to believe....*laughing* oh well...

It must have been really hard for him to decline the first movie. Maybe he will direct one of the future Harry Potter movies, perhaps movie 7? Well I still can not see how someboyd could refuse to direct Harry Potter.

He really wants to direct one doesn't he! Well it's his own fault for passing it up in the first place. I know he's got some great films under his belt, but there are other directors out there who can do the job.

I think that would just be way to creepy if he directed one of the movies, but I guess if he really took great care in making sure that all the important details were shown in the movie it would probably be pretty decent!

When I first read that M. Night was considered for SS, I didn't know what to think. But as I consider it more and more, he's PERFECT for this story! He's so dark and intense, just like the books. Imagine what the franchise would be like if he had directed the first movie...WOW. I hope he does the last one, because it will be over the top.

I bet he would do an AWESOME job on the last movie! It's probably going to be a very dark book, so you need a director who will adapt it appropriately. I hope they consider him for it!

Sounds to me like he really wants to direct one of the HP movies.
I generally like his movies (although The Village was comical, in my opinion).
When the story's good, I think he makes a good movie. I guess we'll have to wait and see if they offer him a Harry Potter.

If all the other directors thought like that, we'd have some kick ass HP movies...I'd really like to see him direct either HBP or like he said the last movie...We'd get everything we've ever wanted in a HP movie.

I think the last one would be a good book for him to do, and for a director to say he wants to do it even before the book comes out I think shows they are dedicated and passionate about the series. I think maybe the books haven't been cherished enough when making the movies and that is why there is so much we fans criticize about them.

Ravenclaw Tower Dude says:
I think he would make a great director for either the sixth or seventh film. His movies are relativly dark, and thats just what the last 2 books are/will be. And the fact that he says he would protect JKR's work means a lot too, especially after the bogus material added in Movie 3. So I would deffinetly approve of him for movie 6 or 7!

Oh!! That's so sweet! M. Night Shyamalan gets my vote for doing a Harry Potter movie. He sounds so sincere, I just had to give it to him! Speaking of which, does anyone know if that's his real name?? And what does it mean?

well I certianly like some of his other movies but I am going to reserve judgement on how well he would fit the seventh book until it is released. I wonder what the Sorcers Stone would have been like if M. Knight would have directed it...

Im not sure I would like Shyamalan as the director for the last book. I dont really like his work too much mainly because of the techniques he uses. He is very dark and there is almost no colour in his films. I also dont like how he makes it so that you finally understand the movie only in like the last 15 mins, and then have to go back to watch it again to fully understand and appreciate the film (see sixth sense). I would be absolutely HORRIFIED if the director from POA came back. I may even consider not seeing the film! There were so many problems with POA, I would be very anxious if he came back (the firebolt and pantronous oversight are just the beginnings of the problems in that film) The only thing that had me watching GOF was that it had to be better than POA (it was, but it still could have been better)
I think the director that did X-men one and 2 as well as Superman would be a good choice for the directors of the 6 or 7th film. Either that or some new, not very famous british director.
