Two million paperback versions of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince are set to go on sale today
in North America. The book will cost $9.99 and is certain to be a best seller.
Previous releases of the paperback versions have reached the No. 1 spot and actually spent more time at that spot than the original hardcover versions.
On a side note, the The Kids and Family Reading Report, released by Yankelovich and Scholastic found that
:
...both kids and their parents credit the popular books with getting more kids to read for fun and with helping kids do better in school. Just over half (51%) of Harry Potter readers ages 5-17 years old say they did not read books for fun before they started reading Harry Potter, but now they do, and 65% say they have been doing better in school since they started reading the series. Parents see an even greater impact. The vast majority of parents (89%) say that reading Harry Potter has helped their child enjoy reading more, and 76% say that reading Harry Potter has helped their child do better in school.
Yankelovich
is a leader in consumer trends tracking and Scholastic
, is a children's publishing, education and media company which publishes the Harry Potter series in America.

Those statistics are amazing! Though I can certainly see why they are true. I know that Harry Potter has really helped my young brother become more into reading. And it's really cool that a lot of kids do better in school. Funny how a lot of schools have banned HP, right?

I have half the books in paperback and half in hardback. I have PS/SS in hardcover, COS POA and GOF in paperback, and I have OotP and HBP in hardcover. Unfortunatly I only have one copy of each. My best friend has all the books in hard and soft cover and the British editions. I'm sure that she's already hit the bookstores *sighs*.

That's odd, how paperbacks sometimes sell more that the original hard covers.
Reading HP has certainly helped many people. It got me interested in other books too.

One doesn't need the paperback version if you already have the hardcover, but I'm sure there are some out there who haven't yet bought HBP. Well it's a well known fact that the Harry Potter series has encouraged reading for all ages. I think it's great and that it should continue to bring back the spark of reading.

The paperback version is only just coming out over there?! That is a long wait. I like hardback best, though, I can't deny that the price is good. Those statistics are startling, though.

The only reason so many kiddies are reading the books in teh first place is because of the films. I wounder if Rowling would be so famous if she didnt sell the books out for films *ponders* No wounder papaer backs sell better...theyre cheaper and you can get replacements cheaply if you spill your drink on them or rip a few pages tehe.

OOOoooo, I love this Kids and Family Reading Report! The data is amazing, though not surprising. I wish everyone knew what a huge impact HP has had on children as far as fostering a love of reading. Heck, as a formerly very burned-out student of literature, I'd pretty much given up on fitting reading-for-fun into my schedule, but then Harry Potter came along and I'm reading for fun more than I ever have in my life! And I haven't been a kid for a loooong time!

I always knew that this series would be a good thing! It's wonderful to see that students are doing better since reading the Harry Potter in school. It's such a positive thing to see and must be rewarding to JK to know her books are helping students.
