Warner Bros. has confirmed to HPANA that it plans to pull all of the first four Harry Potter DVDs off store shelves by early 2007, with no announced plans for their return.
Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban will become unavailable after December 29, 2006. Goblet of Fire will follow suit on February 9, 2007.
First reported by Home Media Retailing Magazine
, the move may indicate WB's interest in stoking sales this non-Potter holiday season, or preparing for newer editions of the films on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray technology.
Called a "moratorium," the practice is commonplace in the home video industry. The most notable instigator is Disney, which often locks away movies in their "vault" to stimulate sales and publicity.
Thanks to Matthew for the tip.

I really dislike when companies practice this. It just increases piracy as well as makes it difficult for people who have the dvds and misplace or break them to get replacements. We have children, do you honestly expect nothing to happen to the dvds over the course of 10 years? Its ridiculous that you wont be able to get these during whatever time frame they decide on.

I think that HD DVD will be a good thing, and I think that the price of the player will go down before we have to buy OotP on HD DVD or anything else. Notice that they did not say they will be shelving VHS! There will always be a way to watch HP and if our DVDs scratch before we can get a HD DVD player, we can just buy it on VHS.

I think that's actually a really good idea - it gets people who were contemplating buying one to hurry up and do it soon. Though I may need to replace my copy of SS (I'm pretty sure it's scratched from overuse)...

I do not own a HD-DVD player and have no plans on getting one. We should write to the WB about how this is wrong. I hope they plan on director cuts instead of changing the format.
What happens of someone don't have the money for a HD-DVD player????

I find this utterly pointless to do really. What if someone's DVD breaks or malfunctions? What are we supposed to do? Sit around and imagine them in our head. Yes we can read the books but it's good to watch the movies as well!

*gasp!* how dare they take away the HP DVDS?!? what do they think they'll accomplish by taking the DVDs from shelves... wish no sign of return? I'm going to have to get copies of each DVD in case on scratches from watching them too often; awh man. Way to help us HP fans make it last forever.

WB must have a marketing strategy idea up their sleeve.
Too many consumers do not have the most recent technological devices at their homes. Some families wait a long time after new devices are marketed before making their purchases.
DVD's are apt to get broken, scratched and lost...what will the consumers do then??? Copying the DVD is illegal!

All about money. Good thing I got the boxed set of ALL the ones that are currently available recently. So poo on them, they will get no more money from me.
Good thing to know for those who haven't forked out the cash yet though.

I really hate it when they do that!!! They the prices skyrocket!! But let's see... what Potter fan in their right mind wouldn't have already bought a copy? I am interested in seeing just how much better the HD version is... And then perhaps buy it in the future when the prices go back down.

Hey all! its sad they are taking away the DVDs....i broke my azkaban one so i better rush and get a new 1!!!! anyways there's 1 thing more... i found a trailer description for Ootp teaser on IMDB boards and for some reason it was quickly taken off....maybe its genuine? who knows? Well here goes:
With a really quick shot of the room with the veil
and some one falling. Then blackness. Then a Gamben voice over from COS,
"It is not our abilities that show what we truly are... it is our choices."
Then another another 3 second flash of Harry casting a Patronus at a Dementor.
Blackness again. Then a shot of #4 Privet drive in the morning then Harry
waking up after Petunia yells HARRY. *start one of the scores from the movie*
A shot of Grimmauld(?) Place materialising(?) then Harry being knocked with a
bludger. Announcer's voice starts this summer...etc,etc." Shot of Harry at
his trial. Then a view of a falling Phoenix feather and DA Galleon in Slow-Mo;
the Announcer says,"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in theaters this
July." Yeah that's it.

I already have the 4 movies but the HD new tv type isn't going to be cheap cost... I think we'll have to wait at least 1-2 years to have some dvd readers at a normal price.

Noooooo! What happens when, or if, something happens to one of my DVDs! I won't be able to go get the movie until they feel like the time is right to put them on the shelves again. I think what they are doing is sooo stupid. I want access to the films at all times. I wonder if they will be available in the Internet. Either way, it still wouldn't be the same as walking into a store and picking it up.
