Warner Bros. has confirmed to HPANA that it plans to pull all of the first four Harry Potter DVDs off store shelves by early 2007, with no announced plans for their return.
Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban will become unavailable after December 29, 2006. Goblet of Fire will follow suit on February 9, 2007.
First reported by Home Media Retailing Magazine
, the move may indicate WB's interest in stoking sales this non-Potter holiday season, or preparing for newer editions of the films on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray technology.
Called a "moratorium," the practice is commonplace in the home video industry. The most notable instigator is Disney, which often locks away movies in their "vault" to stimulate sales and publicity.
Thanks to Matthew for the tip.

Oh man I can see it now, my brother will scratch up my GoF DVD and I'll have to go online and try to find another one. I wish they wouldn't do that.

I do not like this idea! If someone wants to buy Harry Potter they should be able to buy Harry Potter! As if the HP movies haven't already made enough money, the greedy movie industry finds a way to get more!

I will definatly have to getr some back up copies before they are not available. I would hate to think that something might happento one of the discs that I have and then I wouldn't be able to see it for like 7 years if they follow the Disney pattern. I do think that it is a fine move to boost sales this coming holiday without a movie or book to spurn sales. You never know how much you miss something until you can't get it.

Grrrr, I don't like when they do that. I have all the movies, but it seems a bit premature to pull them by next year. I'm not liking the idea that they're preparing for the next technology either because Blue-ray and HD-DVD players are barely out and they're very expensive and it's just like VCRs and whatever the name of their rival type was. You'd think they'd make more money having them available. If it's a publicity thing, which it almost surely is, it's rather annoying.

I understand why they do this... BUT it really sucks that they would do that. For those without all movies I think you should hurry. (AND for Warner Brothers....... SHAME ON YOU.) Even Voldermort would NEVER do anything this EVIL. (Now I am laughing at not only what I said BUT also what I imagian the WB Executives face if they were to read this,) I know LOUSY HUMOURE... But It is still UNFAIR,,, (WUUU WUU WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA) (Again Laughing)

Now that's just wrong. Why would they do that? The Harry Potter DVD's should still be on the shelf, taking them off is a big mistake. What if people still want to buy them? They can't because they won't be at the stores. We better stock up before this happens!!

I hate this idea, but I guess if they want Harry Potter to become a collectible they must do something like this. Now I will be especially more careful with my HP dvds. This so stupid and unfair

Well if worse came to worse, I would just rent one from the video rental place and burn it. It kind of makes me sad, I mean, its like their covering up the potter film legacy. I really think this might be a publicity stunt though just to increase sales and make more money. I really dont think that they will actually shelve them. People seriously do this all the time. There is a furniture store by me, that for the past about fifteen years has had a going out of buisness sale once or twice a year, but they are still in buisness funnily enough.

Stupid idea. I know Disney does it all the time. Then they bring a movie out after a few years and everyone runs out and buys it. Anything to make more money!

Aack! No Potter movies for sale :-(, I own them already and would like the newer tech versions but what about the less technologically advantaged people? I guess they will just have to get them while they last so to speak.
I guess if you have to follow someone's lead Disney is not a bad lead to follow.

Crud...I've gone this long without buying because all my friends have them, but now I'm going to college and the pressure's on. Boo, Warner Bros entertainment. So now we can look forward to seeing smarmy commercials in 15 or whatever years telling us that they've pulled it out of their stupid vault. Why pack it away in the first place??

I think it's good. It forces people to get them if they think they're going to want them...ever. I think Disney brings the movies back after 7 or 8 years. They always improve the DVD and add bonus features so that you want to buy it even if you already have they older one. They sort of did it with GoF. There was a regular DVD and a deluxe version. I wound up buying both. We'll all but the DVDs when they release them again. We'll want our kids to have them.
