Yesterday we learned that Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffithsopens in new window (Vernon Dursley) are scheduled to appearopens in new window in a production of Equusopens in new window on London’s West End next spring. Rehearsals will start in January and the play will be directed by Thea Sharrock.

Dan had this to say on his new role:

I'm really excited to be part of this production. I'm thrilled to be working with Richard Griffiths again. This is obviously a huge departure for me as an actor, but Equus is such an amazing play that this really was an opportunity not to be missed.

Rehearsal starts in January and I'm very much looking forward to working with Thea Sharrock who is an incredibly talented Director and only hope I do the role justice!

Dan will play the lead character, Alan Strang, while Mr. Griffiths, fresh from his award winning role in The History Boys on Broadway will portray psychiatrist, Martin Dysart.

Previous actors to portray these characters on the stage included Peter Firth and Tom Hulce as Alan and Anthony Hopkins, Anthony Perkins and Richard Burton as psychiatrist Martin Dysart. The play received a Tony Award in 1975 for best play.

Additionallyopens in new window, the play will be in rehearsals for six weeks in London starting in January and will probably open in March.

No ticket information is currently available but as soon as we know any information we will be sure to let all you know.

I hope he does well in the role. The play does sound a little odd for my taste, but to each his own.

Oh! Congratulations to Dan! I'm glad that he is able to break from the Harry Potter persona. Sometimes it's hard when an actor is in such a strong role to be able to do other things. But this looks promising. Huzzah!

I heard about this from one of my friends! We CRACKED up when we heard about Daniel's scene where he is supposed to imitate "sexual ecstasy from riding a horse naked." Ahahaha. Classic.

Dan is really branching out, isn't he? That's cool though I'm sure he'll get plenty of opportunities to do different things in the future.

Yeah, for all the Daniel Radcliff fans, you get to see him naked in this play.
It is defintly a huge departure from Harry Potter. I hope that he can still retain the role, as we can't have another poerson to play Harry, as it would look silly because we saw Daniel grow up on the movies, getting someone else to fill those shoes would be impossable. I think that when all the actors signed up to do the movies, they all should have signed a contract saying that they had to stay for all 7 movies.

Also, I think that another reason why Daniel is doing this show is that he is worried that he would becaome a type cast, and that he won't be able to get better roles.

Hey, I think it's great he's doing as much as he can to diversify during the filming of the HP movies. But as Eleanor says, he'd better stick around for 6 and 7. It'd be ridiculous to get other actors for those films. Especially not Harry's character.

Wow, it's a very bold move for D.Radcliffe to make. Controversial as it may be, it will be a very bold move and new experience in the least. Let no-one say he's not brave...
