Yesterday we learned that Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths
(Vernon Dursley) are scheduled to appear
in a production of Equus
on London’s West End next spring. Rehearsals will start in January and the play will be directed by Thea Sharrock.
Dan had this to say on his new role:
I'm really excited to be part of this production. I'm thrilled to be working with Richard Griffiths again. This is obviously a huge departure for me as an actor, but Equus is such an amazing play that this really was an opportunity not to be missed.
Rehearsal starts in January and I'm very much looking forward to working with Thea Sharrock who is an incredibly talented Director and only hope I do the role justice!
Dan will play the lead character, Alan Strang, while Mr. Griffiths, fresh from his award winning role in The History Boys on Broadway will portray psychiatrist, Martin Dysart.
Previous actors to portray these characters on the stage included Peter Firth and Tom Hulce as Alan and Anthony Hopkins, Anthony Perkins and Richard Burton as psychiatrist Martin Dysart. The play received a Tony Award in 1975 for best play.
Additionally
, the play will be in rehearsals for six weeks in London starting in January and will probably open in March.
No ticket information is currently available but as soon as we know any information we will be sure to let all you know.

That's really special that Dan's going to be in a play. I think it's funny that the Vernon Dursley man is going to be in it too. Odd sort of combination, eh?

I love living so close to London! Equus is an incredible play, I remember a T.S group doing it for an exam at school, so I know that it is definitely a deviation from Dan's usual acting roles. I was redaing about this in The Times, and they were explaining quite enthusiastically the requirements for the more, ahem, adult part of his role! Should be, er, interesting!

Heh, in London. No surprise there. Well, I would have liked to see it - Dan in the lead, and no do overs if you mess up? That should be great.

That wonderful for Dan. Congrats.
However, in America, the news are saying that dan is going to be naked or show some skin. Can someone explain it to me? I am hearing it right?

Whoa! What a great challenge for Dan! It's cool that he keeps accepting roles that will add to his acting skills. I read this play in college and it is pretty heavy. I think it'll help Dan with the darker HP films he has ahead of him.

Eleanor: I'm not that surprised, considering that they weren't sure how the actors would work out, but now that the kids *have* stuck with the project for five films, it'd be weird to change actors. Dumbledore was one thing (and unavoidable, of course), but the main kids would be entirely different.

I don't get the "huge departure for me as an actor" statement but does that mean that itwill be his last acting job or something? I might just be messing it up but oh well. I bet he and Mr. Griffiths will do the play magnificently.

Ooh that's cool! Dan doing theatre. I've never heard of Eqqus, but it seems as though Dan is quite knowledgeable in this area. ;) It'd be nice to go and see him in a different role.

I just hope his new role doesnt outrage anyone, I really want him to continue doing the Harry Potter movies. I just could see this going bad in so many ways, then Warner Bros. telling him he cant play Harry anymore becuase of outraged parents. They say this is an X-rated play, about animal torture and bestiality (fetish with horses). I think he should chose a role like this after doing the 7th movie, so there wouldnt be any controversy about it. Anywho, I hope he does well and doesnt stop being Harry in the movies.

Glory Be!!! Will he be 18 by then? Oh, what I would give to see Dan in his birthday suit... OH.. I mean, to see him perform on stage... yes, yes, THAT'S what I meant! Really though, this will be great as a learning experience. I've always loved Dan, but he does need to work on his "angst" face. I think his life's been good, and he doesn't have too many negative experiences to draw on. Go Dan!!
