Yesterday we learned that Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffithsopens in new window (Vernon Dursley) are scheduled to appearopens in new window in a production of Equusopens in new window on London’s West End next spring. Rehearsals will start in January and the play will be directed by Thea Sharrock.

Dan had this to say on his new role:

I'm really excited to be part of this production. I'm thrilled to be working with Richard Griffiths again. This is obviously a huge departure for me as an actor, but Equus is such an amazing play that this really was an opportunity not to be missed.

Rehearsal starts in January and I'm very much looking forward to working with Thea Sharrock who is an incredibly talented Director and only hope I do the role justice!

Dan will play the lead character, Alan Strang, while Mr. Griffiths, fresh from his award winning role in The History Boys on Broadway will portray psychiatrist, Martin Dysart.

Previous actors to portray these characters on the stage included Peter Firth and Tom Hulce as Alan and Anthony Hopkins, Anthony Perkins and Richard Burton as psychiatrist Martin Dysart. The play received a Tony Award in 1975 for best play.

Additionallyopens in new window, the play will be in rehearsals for six weeks in London starting in January and will probably open in March.

No ticket information is currently available but as soon as we know any information we will be sure to let all you know.

Thanks to Page from DR.co.ukopens in new window, DR.comopens in new windowas well as Jocole and Tiffany for all the emails.

SnapesSorceress says:

I have a very personal reason for posting on this topic. I have a friend who starred as Alan Strang (the role Daniel will be playing) in a local production of Equus 26 years ago. It is still seen as one of the most incredible and electric productions ever staged here (Boulder, CO). The play itself was first introduced to me via my very knowledgable (and horse-loving!!!) sister, Karen (Madam Marsh to HPANAers) when I was 15 (I'm now 42!). I had wondered at the time how a horse-lover like her could be so moved by a play that deals with, what I initially thought was, gratuitous animal torture mixed in with a naked kid's perversion. I then read the play and found myself just as moved by the story. It's impossible for me to put into words the exact reasons why this play is so poetic, and visceral, and tragic, and how I find myself so moved by a character who basically shows his strange love of horses by blinding them. It's a phenomenal (and beloved) piece of work, and it would be a dream to see Daniel as a part of it. I do hope that adults will take into consideration the fact that even if it is Daniel Radcliffe, it is not a play that is appropriate for children under 15 or 16 (some kids are more emotionally mature than others--it's a parent's call), as it is a disturbing subject matter (and NOT because of the nudity). One thing is for sure--if Daniel can bring to this role the depth and emotion required, he will have managed to transform from an endearing child actor to an adult actor with major clout. And kudos to Daniel for having the guts and heart to take on such a difficult role! I hope he is a major success, and I also hope that his Equus audience is more mature than the twits I encountered at the three screenings of GOF I attended who squealed themselves silly over the bath tub scene with Harry and Myrtle...

And a major thanks to my sister, Madam Marsh, for allowing me to read her copy of Equus back in 1979, and to Elmer for having the heart, daring and talent to portray Alan Strang so beutifully 26 years ago that that production has become a thing of local theatrical legend around these parts!

Now I'm going to have to go and look up this play so I can see what its all about. Sounds like it must be good if so many great name actors have been listed on the bill. IMDB, here I come.

I just read what SnapesSorceress had to say and I am very impressed. I remember all of the hype when the movie came out in 1977 but just brushed it off as the media trying to push the envelope again. I think I'll look further into the play itself. Thank you for the enlightenment.Blessings! Hecate3fold!
