Author JK Rowling explicitly clarified tonight on her final appearance at Radio City Music Hall in New York City that Dumbledore is "definitely" dead.
ยป UPDATE: Transcripts of both evenings are now available.
She, along with Stephen King and John Irving, hosted another 6,000 people as they read from their books to raise money for charity. Rowling surprised fans with several tantalizing tidbits about the finale of her popular Harry Potter series.
While the authors all read from the same passages of their books as last night, their introductions were handled by different surprise celebrities. Actor-director Tim Robbins (who starred in The Shawshank Redemption) introduced King and Stanley Tucci welcomed Irving.
Rowling was brought on stage (again to standing ovation) by Kathy Bates, who proclaimed that the author took kids to places "Google does not go," describing the effect Rowling's books have had in shaping an entire generation of digital-age kids. At first fearful of the prospect of seeing the Potter books be made into the very digital creations they were meant to draw children away from (at the same time ruining imagination with special effects), Bates said fans "faithfully returned to the books" after seeing their incarnations light up the silver screen, and that Rowling had created "readers for life."
One audience member greeted Jo by yelling "Don't kill Harry," to which Jo responded: "Oh, no pressure then."
Tonight's audience was treated with much more informative and revealing answers than yesterday. Here are a few highlights (again, paraphrased):
Rowling later revealed that while she thought she had settled on a title for book 7, a new one occurred to her in the shower this afternoon. She declined to elaborate.
She also suggested there were to be plot twists in book 7 that she didn't think anyone has already or could possibly guess about.
Stephen King, reponding to a question about what he is afraid of, said: "When I picked up the Harry Potter books, I was surprised at the depth of the deatheaters." To which Rowling replied tauntingly: "I scared Stephen King."

THANK GOD. Although that doesn't help those of us trying desperately to produce plausible book 7 theories, it does finally put those fruitless (and annoying) conspiracy "Dumbledore lives on!" theories to rest. I don't mind it as much when people try to guess what the title of book 7 will be, but I just hope they know there's no way they'll be right.
If you could bring one of your characters to life -- other than Harry -- who would it be? Hagrid.
If you could host five of your own characters for dinner, who would they be?
I hate it when people ask Jo pointless questions like these.
She also suggested there were to be plot twists in book 7 that she didn't think anyone has already or could possibly guess about.
Well that much is obvious ; ) hence the reason the HP series is such a fantastic read.

This is good information, I so wish I was there! Wow, she just thought of a new title in the shower, I wish we knew what it is! It's like a heart broke a little more to know for sure that Dumbledore is really gone. = ( I know Harry has to do it alone and I know he can!!
For Jo to be able to say that she scared Stephen King is just awesome, I mean how many people can say that?? It's Stephen King!! Jo is a brilliant author! = )

But I always expected dd to be dead. She isn't the type to make him come back to lfe in the footsteps of gandalf or aslan. I just could never see DD coming back. HArry jsut has to go on alone and Jk knows that.

It is great to finally get a few answers out of JKR about the status of DD. Now all we can hope for is that DD's portrait will be able to be an asset to Harry in the upcoming book. And this I see happening.
I just wonder what plot twists JKR is going to throw at us, and what she means by Petunia is more than meets the eye.

*sigh* I love Jo... she is so clever... and I never once thought that Dumbledore would come back to life... although many people would want him to... I wish I was there... at the reading... I would have loved to see JO... what would be "funny" is that Jo really does kill harry just to spite all of the people telling her not to... I know that would be mean... but what if....?

[b] Dumbledore 'definitely' dead, says Rowling[b/] I find that kind of hard to belive. Maybe she is only saying that to get us to forget about DD. Then it turns out he will still be alive!

DD could be dead but he could always come back to the story as maybe a memory like Tom Riddle or Harry finds a letter DD wrote about like "his dieing wishes" that might help Harry in his battle against Voldemort.....I dunno guessing here

Well, I have to say that I pretty much always figured he was dead. But like Hecate3fold said, It's not like he can't communicate. And it's been mentioned before, in the second book, that he's never truly gone if those who are loyal to him remain... and Harry is "Dumbledores man through and through", so he's not really gone. But it's not really a surprise to me that he's 'definitly dead'... even if it is so heart breaking. Thanks for clearing that up with us though Jo. I believe we needed that. Have an awesome day :)

Ugh, I hate that people keep telling Jo how to write her book. I mean she is the author and it should end how she originally planned and should not be influenced by other people.

Woooow!!! I mean wow! Finally she said it! I knew it, and I've said it in many of my posts on the forums, that DD is dead and there's a point at the end of the sentence. Rowling is not the person to ply with the death of a character. If he dies, then he is dead, and that's all.
New title, plot twists, oh my God, I'm sooo excited!!!!!!!! I hope she will tell us later the other title as well, not just the one she picks.
More to Petunia than meets the eye............. But what what what what???????
I loved the "I scared Stephen King"-bit!!!

This is a copy of what mugglenet has about it, and it is a lot more impressive:
[b]Other than Harry, Jo would most want to bring Hagrid into the real world.
- There's more to Aunt Petunia than meets the eye, and we'll find out what's unique about her in book seven.
- Don't expect Dumbledore to pull a Gandalf.
- Dumbledore IS really dead. "Everyone needs to move through the 5 stages of grief" and get past his death. She also apologizes to DumbledoreIsNotDead.com for ruining the purpose of their site.
- Jo's future after Potter includes taking a long break from writing. She also plans to release a young children's book (currently half written) that is shorter than any Potter novel.
- The librarians in the Potter novels have to be evil, otherwise the students would have nice librarians to help them find all the information they need. "Hermione wouldn't have to do any work!"
- Author Salman Rushdie came up with his son to ask, after a detailed theory, if Snape is good or bad. Jo replied that "your opinion was correct." Rushdie's opinion, unfortunately, was hard to follow.
- After being asked if there was one question fans should have asked by now but haven't, Jo couldn't reference any question in particular.
- While taking a shower before the reading today, Jo said that she had come up with a different title for book seven that would work better than her current title. No word on which title will be used, though.
- Stephen King said he was scared of Death Eaters, to which Jo replied, "I scared Stephen King."
- Moderator Soledad O'Brien asked the three authors who from their books they'd invite to dinner. Stephen immediately said he'd invite Harry and Hermione.
- While Jo is listing the characters who she'd invite to dinner, she names the trio but then pauses. The crowd begins to shout out other characters, but Jo responds, "I'm the only one who knows who lives through the series," accidentally implying that she could only list characters who make it through the final book. Her final two choices (after realizing what she said) were Dumbledore and Hagrid.[/b)

Sorry for double posting, but according to my last post there is one statement which needs to be emphasised:
Author Salman Rushdie came up with his son to ask, after a detailed theory, if Snape is good or bad. Jo replied that "your opinion was correct." Rushdie's opinion, unfortunately, was hard to follow.
NOW BRING ON THIS THEORY SOMEHOW!!!
Snape is the character most people talk about and we all expect him to play a big part in book 7! This is so important, I can't understand why it is not mentioned here on HPANA!
