In a recent interview Alec Hopkins, who was cast as a young Severus Snape in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, discusses
the process of landing the role, filming and what he had to learn to portray the role for Severus.
Alec sent in some pictures and then waited a nerve-wracking four months till news came that he had the role. Alec mentions meeting Alan Rickman and how he prepared for the role:
Alan Rickman spent a couple of hours having a chat with me about the part and obviously that was nerve wracking; there was me as a nobody and then this famous actor.
He's very serious about acting but he likes to joke around. It was really nice and it surprised me - I thought a big star would be different but he was so nice.
I watched how he moved, spoke and the emotions he goes through. He also gave me some pointers about the character - how he would walk and hold himself, like keeping a straight back.
Alec also mentions that working on the films is a lot harder than people think:
Everyone is really nice but it's very daunting. You don't realise how many people there are and if you messed up you'd be so embarrassed.
It's been a great privilege just to be part of it. It's not just a film, but it's a Harry Potter film.
You will be able to read more on this story tomorrow.

How lucky was he? I would love to be able to sit and chat with Allan Rickman for a few hours. Just chat about what he thinks of his characters, in any of his films. I find him a facinating person.

It is good to see that Alan Rickman kind of took the younger Alec under his wing a little bit and showed him what to do a bit. I can't wait to read more about the upcoming movie.

Wow, first look finally! I think he looks like him a bit. Of course, those pics from early August or so of the filming near the lake had a far-off shot of Alec Hopkins dressed in Snape attire; you knew it was Snape but you couldn't see who was playing him. Now that we have both visuals, I think he'll fit perfectly. He seems desperate to get it right. After all, he knows how major the character is.
I'm not surprised that Alan Rickman talked with him, nor am I surprised by how Rickman was described. It makes perfect sense that Rickman would want this guy to play the character appropriately and that he'd help him out. And the fact that he's described as being serious but full of jokes is not surprising.
In PoA, Rickman and Gambon had decided to play a joke on Dan Radcliffe; Gambon bought a fart machine and put it into Dan's sleeping bag during that sequence in the Great Hall. It was getting late and everyone was tired and annoyed to be doing more takes for a scene they'd already gotten right. At the end, Cuaron said they'd do it one more time. So in the scene when Gambon and Rickman are standing above Harry talking about Sirius, instead of doing their lines Alan Rickman excitedly told Gambon, who had the control to the fart machine, to "push the button", and so Dan Radcliffe's sleeping bag let off a ripping fart and Gambon and Rickman broke out laughing.
I'm just excited that the trailer will be out by Christmas or so and that Cuaron may be on the shortlist for HBP's director! God I'd love that! Cuaron loves Alan Rickman and says that if he's in your film, use him as much as possible. I say for the sixth film, use a director who's going to put Rickman in every scene he deserves, as he is the title character the sixth time round!

Seems like a nice kid. I'm glad Alan tutored him, I'm sure that will help things. He looks a lot like I envisioned Snape as a teenager.
But I have to ask Geri... who is Rick?

Sounds like he had a lot to learn about Severus.
We can only hope that he remembers it all, what Alan has teached him, while acting as our dearest Professor!
But I'm sure that Alan is a great Teacher!
