As we enter into the 25th anniversary of Banned Books Week (September 23-30), the American Library Association (ALA) has published a list of the most challenged
books in the last five years and the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling is at the number one spot.
Rounding out the top 10 banned books:

Well of course the HP books would join the club. It is NOT funny to read lists of banned or challenged books over the years- you'll see Little House on the Prairie for Pete's Sake. Is there truly a child's book out there that can please everyone? My neighbor is a grandmother to quite a few grandchildren and she just told me she's proud of her smart grandson who just finished The Lord of The Rings at his age. I asked if he liked Harry Potter then, and she said Absolutely not, he is not allowed near those books, they are the devil. Lord trilogy was ok but somehow Harry Potter is demonic because of the magic? Do they not know what the ring is? I want to ask how they feel, then, about Narnia- Narnia is probably ok too. They have not even opened the first Harry Potter book- they read news such as this and make assumptions and don't even let the boy check them out. So sad.

It actually doesn't surprise me that Harry Potter has been banned so much. I think that their reasoning is either because of the magic/wizards/etc. in it, or because it is consider, by some, to be "anti-Christ". I personally don't understand either view, because the books are works of pure fiction and are not real in any way.

It is a challenging book. But everyone wants to read it, so it's less challenging.

Most challenged? Hmmmm...I wonder what that means...I hope it's a good thing...But "Banned Books Week" totally scratches "good thing" off. I do know that Harry Potter is banned from many schools. Does this mean that Harry Potter is the number 1 banned book?? Oh well. Mmmm, I just read the other comments and now I understand..haha...anyway, Harry Potter is number one?????? If it has to do with religion, I can understand why "Of Mice and Men" is on it. But Harry Potter.. Okay, there is witchcraft and wizardry and other stuff like that, but Harry Potter doesn't have mercy killings!! Harry Potter always related to love in a way...oh well. Okay, Harry Potter should be on that list but definitely not number one!
