It has taken Robert Watt over 10 months, but a plaque has finally been installed
outside the former cafe where JK Rowling famously wrote part of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Ms. Rowling's plaque joins one for Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island and one for poet William McGonagall.
Even though Mr. Watt has never read the Harry Potter books he felt that some recognition was needed
as to where it all began and approached Ms. Rowling, the council, as well as the owners last year with the idea of trying to create a writer's corner in the city.
The plaque, with a photo of the author simple states:
JK Rowling wrote some of the early chapters of Harry Potter in the rooms on the first floor of this building.

Just another reason for me to go to Scotland... :) I would love to go to the UK to see that cafe, to find Christopher Robin's used bookstore, and to make a rubbing of Jane Austen's tombstone... among other things...
*Sigh* someday...

This is really great news. I love seeing Harry Potter recognized as a great piece of literature and not just some "kids" book, ya know. I didn't know other authors had written at the same place--that's pretty cool.

That is so wonderful. You never know where someone will be when such wonderment strikes their imaginations. I kind of wonder, though is it really a tribute or just a way to get people to come to the cafe?

I'd like to go and see that cafe sometime. heh, about time some recognition was given.
Hmm, is the name, William McGonagall, just a coincidence?

...uugh! I hate people like that. Hes not even READ the HP books yet whines for a plaque on his cafes wall to say they were partialy written there. Hes only doing it for money, plaque means Hp fans flock to see it, sit in the same cafe were it all started...and of course buy a drink or 2 with the pennies going right in to his grubby pocket. UGH! Hmm nno wait...says former cafe? Wonder whats there now...probably still some sort of shop or buisness id bet, so still..uugh! tehe.

That is very thoughtful of Mr. Watt. Some rcognition on the early works of Ms. Rowling is wonderful, personally for me it is a sign to keep me on the ground.

From reading the article, the site is now a Chinese restaurant, and Mr. Watt isn't afiliated with it. To me it is impressive that someone who hasn't read her books (who ARE these people?) chose to pursue getting JK Rowling recognized just as Robert Louis Stevenson was recognized in a plaque on that same block. He didn't profit from it - he's just a guy who appreciates the unique history of that area! Now let's get him some copies of those books, shall we???
