While on a press junket for his new movie Tideland, director Terry Gilliam
answered questions as to why he hasn't directed a Harry Potter movie or if he will in the future.
When asked
if he would direct any of the movies, he said:
No. It's a factory job, is what it is. I don't like that. It's a big operation the way they run it now, and it's so heavily controlled by the studio, considering the kind of work i want to do. But it doesn't stop people on the web fantasizing about me doing the last one.
According
to Mr. Gilliam Prisoner was the best in the series so far:
MTV: What would your Potter have been like?
Gilliam: Alfonso Cuaron's [Prisoner of Azkaban] is really good, but the first two I thought were just shite. They missed the whole point of it; they missed the magic of it ... Alfonso did something much closer to what I would've done.
Thanks to Tim and TLC
for the links.

I think, what Gillam is trying to say is that a movie has to be something more than just an illustration to the book it is based on, the director has to put his soul to it - otherwise from artistic point of view there isn't any justification to making one - it is just pure commerce.
Gillam knows what he is talking about: "12 monkeys", "Brazil", "Monty Puthon" etc speak for themselves.

Well. I totally agree with him. PoA was definately the best movie. Too bad it didn't do well in the box office as the other movies!

To me, he sounds a little bit bitter. Maybe he really wanted to do a Potter movie, but they didn't ask him to, or they wouldn't give him the control he wanted for it. The reason WB puts so much control over the HP movies is that Jo wants to remain in some control as well. It has to be that way, to stay true to the books.
And as far as Cuaron's take on PoA, I think his take on the book was the worst one yet. Too many changes!

Actually i do have to say he is right. Half the time they don't capture the magic..especially in the first 2..the last 2 were better...but they need to be better as well. Its not always about visual effects. Its about the story. We'll see how the 5th will do.

Before you guys hate on Gilliam you should watch his movies. They are very innovative and beautiful. So i won't be biased in this case...I love Harry Potter...but i think those movies could have been at the LOTRs level. But they are not...and that's just sad. One day these movie will be redone and hopefully whoever does it is more faithful and respectful to the books.

auror weasley I doubt that's the case. He is a respectable director..and just because he wasn't asked to do Harry potter it doesn't mean he's bad or jealous. He is very critical..and the very critical ones are always the best in my opinion, because they are not afraid of speaking their mind and showing their vision.

He seems like he knows what he's talking about, but ya know... just a bit cocky about the whole thing, isn't he. Wish he would direct a movie just so he'd have to live up to those grandiose criticisms.
Good stuff.

Terry Gilliam, while truly talented as and actor and director doesn't strick me as one who could direct HP in the ways we have become acquainted. I'm sure the director that Warner Bros. has chosen will continue to do work comparable to the past movies.

I absolutely agree with Gilliam in his opinion of the movies thus far. I was dissapointed by the first one especially. It was so flat and did not really reveal the existance of the magical very well. I also wanted it to be more magical.

Very interesting, it's shame that he won't ever direct a Potter movie.
And for the record i agree with him about the first two movies, they were awful and Columbus clearly missed the point.

I think I am glad now he didn't do it. I liked the first two and hated PoA. It made no sense and did not follow the story line.
Yeah for him not doing it. Stay off where you can mess with other stuff.

I like the fact that this guy is very critical. I like people like that. However, I'm really not a fan of the HP movies, and I actually think that Prizoner of Azkaban was the worst of the four movies released. They messed up the roles of the characters and made Hermione all vain with comments like "is that really how my hair looks at the back?" and making her hair sleek instead of bushy in the first place! Plus I don't like Gambon as Dumbledore and although whoever portrays Sirius does an ok job, I feel as though the real Sirius is still out there somewhere. I know that the movies can't possibly contain every detail that the books have, but I can't help but think that PoA really didn't capture the essence of the story. Well GoF seemed as though the movie was about a summary of HP&GoF not on the actual book itself, but the acting was ok. One part I particularly disliked though was when the Beaxbatons girls arrived and they were doing some sort of intro and sort of farted out butterflies... I thought that was pretty stupid... plus we never see Krum play so no one sees why the wizarding world obsesses over him...

I actually think SS was the most magical and they all sort of lost it after that, but no matter the movies we still have the books which is a much better thing.

Im veeeeery curious.... I want to see how he would have done Harry... I think that even though every movie so far has been good... No one will ever catch the essence of what Harry is... I mean, first of all he is a complicated character and second of all only the author can do that... Is going to be very difficult for someone, even the best in the bussines to catch it...But good luck!

He was good in Monty Python but has to be pretty messed up to think PoA was the best. I thought that movie was the worst, a disgrace to the book. Where are the school uniforms? And I don't recall there being a giant clock in the middle of Hogwarts either. As far as I can remember there were like no lessons where they actually used magic besides against the Boggart and Harry was wearing goggles...
