Terry Gilliam: Warner Bros. "blew it" Popular (9216)

While on a press junket for his new movie Tideland, director Terry Gilliamopens in new window answered questions as to why he hasn't directed a Harry Potter movie or if he will in the future.

When askedopens in new window if he would direct any of the movies, he said:

No. It's a factory job, is what it is. I don't like that. It's a big operation the way they run it now, and it's so heavily controlled by the studio, considering the kind of work i want to do. But it doesn't stop people on the web fantasizing about me doing the last one.

Accordingopens in new window to Mr. Gilliam Prisoner was the best in the series so far:

MTV: What would your Potter have been like?

Gilliam: Alfonso Cuaron's [Prisoner of Azkaban] is really good, but the first two I thought were just shite. They missed the whole point of it; they missed the magic of it ... Alfonso did something much closer to what I would've done.

Thanks to Tim and TLCopens in new window for the links.

Can't say i agree with the guy!!!

The first 2 followed the books more closely and i loved them!!

Much better than the latter 2 which missed out whole sections and even characters!!!

I'm glad he was never asked to direct any of them, at least we would have a chance of at least getting one good HP film....!!!

I'm sorry but the films were ok, but nothing i was expecting, but i really liked the first 2, but again the latter 2 were a bit of a disappointment!!

While I would have liked very much for Mr. Gilliam to have had the opportunity to show what he would do with Harry, I don't believe that his assesment if very fair. SS, and CoS were both wonderful films about young children for young children. Certainly as the characters have grown so have the films as they should. I have enjoyed each film as it has been presented for each had it's own feel while staying true to the greater story. While I agree that everyone is entitled to their own opinion proffesionalism and common coutesy do have a place even for the very talented. Perhaps Thumper said it best, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say nothin' at all."

I agree somewhat. Hard to tell if some ego isn't involved here. I am sure he would be good, and most likely better than the first two.

Whew, sounds like somebody needs to deflate his head a little. I think his ego might be bigger then Aunt Marge after Harry blew her up!

Yeah, whatever, he probably hasn't even been asked.

Plus, he directed Brothers Grimm, and that didn't look like a little art studio film to me.
So sad...

Well by the sounds of Gilliam i'm glad he didn't direct a HP Film! ( Although I do agree that POA was definetely the best of the movies) I didn't think the first two movies were awful....

POA was my least favourite out of all the movies; so I'm glad this guy will never ever direct one, because if he likes Alfonso... ugh.

The thing is, I don't think we want someone working so hard to make a film their own. He says they're just a factory job. We want something that will stick as close as possible to the story and feeling/moods of the books themselves. THis guy seems a bit too out there to direct HP. I did love Monty Python though.

I respect his opinion and all, but I personally did not like the PoA movie at all. I guess it's a good thing then that he won't be directing any of the HP films.

I do agree however that if he feels his work will be compromised he shouldn't direct one.

I don't like him. I don't like him at all. And unlike many people, I loved the first two films and that's how I imagined Harry Potter to be like. I'm extremely happy, happy beyond words, that Terry Gilliam isn't directing the Harry Potter films, because if he was, then I'd start up an Anti Terry Gilliam petition, continuously moan to Warner Bros. and even refuse to watch the films. That's how much I dislike him.

Wow, Terry Gilliam really does sound nasty in this article!

Tao, you got it totally right! I hate when people totally cut down the first two movies as childish, and unimaginative! I think people get caught up in the dark and complex story that is further developed in each novel.
They forget what it was like after reading that first book, we didn't know all about the intricate connection between Harry and Voldemort, there are no horrible deaths etc. (I don't think Quirrel counts), and it ends on a pretty light note. I know we can never go back and read that first book the same way again, but I think we have to try and remember that feeling when watching the first movie.
if we consider this, the movie version fits it well. : )

Although I thought there were some problems with the HP films, I'm not convinced that Terry Gilliam would have done any better. His remarks sound a bit like a case of "sour grapes" to me. He has done some great films, but I doubt if he directed a Harry Potter film that it would be any closer to canon than the ones that have been directed by others.

I partly agree with Mr. Gilliam. Mr Cuaron's prisoner of azkaban was fantastic, but the first two will never, ever in a lifetime be 'shite'.

I guess some people are jealous because they weren't asked to direct the Harry Potter movies. The only reason he won't direct Half-Blood Prince or Movie 7 is because he wanted to direct the whole series. He needs to not be such a baby.

I don't think WB "blew it" but the first two were a little more childish than I think the books deserved. Don't get me wrong I still loved them. I think the films continue to grow and get better with each one so I'm not complaining. Plus, who needs the movies to be perfect when we have the books :-)

What is wrong with him? SS, COS, POA, and GOF are all incredibly good, and I can't pick one over other other. Well, yes, maybe I can. POA WAS a bit better than the first two, but the first two were really good, and really well done. This guy is crazy, he has completely lost his marbles.
