While on a press junket for his new movie Tideland, director Terry Gilliam
answered questions as to why he hasn't directed a Harry Potter movie or if he will in the future.
When asked if he would direct any of the movies, he said:
No. It's a factory job, is what it is. I don't like that. It's a big operation the way they run it now, and it's so heavily controlled by the studio, considering the kind of work i want to do. But it doesn't stop people on the web fantasizing about me doing the last one.
According to Mr. Gilliam Prisoner was the best in the series so far:
MTV: What would your Potter have been like?
Gilliam: Alfonso Cuaron's [Prisoner of Azkaban] is really good, but the first two I thought were just shite. They missed the whole point of it; they missed the magic of it ... Alfonso did something much closer to what I would've done.

I'm glad he doesn't want to do a movie. If he thinks PoA was good... Personally, I am just disgusted with the way PoA massacred the entire story. SS and CoS were the best ones because unlike the more recent two they were pretty close to canon.

He did just seem a bit sour grapish about it didn't he?
And of course there is going to be tight reigns, you are talking about a multi-hundred million dollar movie series!

Well if hed do it like Alfonso Im not missing him. Sorry bud. The first movie also got me, and so many others hooked on the series - again, or for the first time. I dont think directors should have full control w/ HP films, there is just too much & I support collaboration. The films are a lot of work and Mr. Terry Gilliam doesn't sound like he would appreciate it very much. :[

Personally I feel that the first two movies were some of the best, you can see this by the great reaction they received and how many new HP fans resulted from these movies. If he thinks they are "shite", then better he keep his opinions to himself.

That's really a shame. I think he would have made a fabulous director for HBP, or any HP movie, really. If he really put as much thought into it as to what he would do with an HP movie would he direct one, I think he should do it anyway.

I would have to agree with Terry there. the first two movies where shite and so was the last one. the 3rd one was best but not by far.
It would be really awsome if Terry would make a harry potter movie, however it would be a far jump from Monty Python.

Personally, I strongly disagree with the thing about PoA. I think GoF was best, but I also liked SS and CoS. They both got the 'magic' down. But PoA... The magic was gone and it was pretty much focused on trying to be funny.

The first two films were wonderful in my opinion. If he thinks that Alfonso Cuaron's work is closer to his vision of the series - fine. But trashing Chris Columbis' work is a little over the top.

I got news for this guy Chris Columbus did an outstanding job with the first two films and if he would have done them different, it makes me think that maybe his version would have been the shite and the films would not have been so darned popular!
