While on a press junket for his new movie Tideland, director Terry Gilliam
answered questions as to why he hasn't directed a Harry Potter movie or if he will in the future.
When asked
if he would direct any of the movies, he said:
No. It's a factory job, is what it is. I don't like that. It's a big operation the way they run it now, and it's so heavily controlled by the studio, considering the kind of work i want to do. But it doesn't stop people on the web fantasizing about me doing the last one.
According
to Mr. Gilliam Prisoner was the best in the series so far:
MTV: What would your Potter have been like?
Gilliam: Alfonso Cuaron's [Prisoner of Azkaban] is really good, but the first two I thought were just shite. They missed the whole point of it; they missed the magic of it ... Alfonso did something much closer to what I would've done.
Thanks to Tim and TLC
for the links.

Hmm...he's got a good point. I guess he feels if he can't work to his own full extent, there is really no need to direct any of the last movies. Oh well, we can all still hope.

Blah, blah, blah bitty blah. Heh. Sorry, but that guy is just annoyed that he wasn't asked to direct the first two. Of course, yes, they weren't as great as the last two, but I don't see how they missed it. The first two books were much more cheerful and magical for Harry as a youngster. They were dark when they needed to be, but for the most part, they weren't that way. PoA became the darkest, and thus why it's "closer" to how he'd handle it. Making PS/SS and CoS dark would've ruined them, imo. They needed to be more cheerful as Harry is still relatively new to everything and still quite young.

I completely agree with his views. Prisoner IS the best one, and while they are good, the first two just missed the magic of the HP books.

See, I thought that PoA was one of the worst, but more for the script than the imagery. I liked the ideas, but the script was terrible. Not that that was Alfonso's fault...
Seems like an jerk to me though...

I always try to give hollywood people the benefit of the doubt, but they consistently prove me wrong with their egocentric comments. Has the guy read any of the books? At least the first two movies conformed closer to the books then POA or GOF did.

Well if he thinks he can do a better job the I'd like to see him try...and the films not factory related, especially since the books have already been written, its like doing your own version of someone elses work...Anyway..I'm glad he liked Alfonso at least.

Wow. Can you say "conceited"? Geeze, a little full of ourselves, aren't we, buddy?
Yes, PoA was good, but he kinda got a little outa control.. And I liked GoF.. I thought they did as well as they could have with such a long, detailed book..
And I have no idea who he is by the way..

Well let me just say that I'm VERY GLAD that he will not be doing the last one, I don't want it to be murdered. The first two missed the point?!!! I have do wonder if he has even read the books. The first two were the best-and if anyone had any complaints it was that it just followed the books which to me is a good thing. Alfonso did a not so canon job and although I love Prisoner-it makes you feel like you have ADD because he just jumps from one thing to the next.

Well, I, for one, am happy that he didn't direct the movie... calling the first two "rubbish"is crazy. The first two HP films is one of the main reasons why I am an adamant HP fanatic, especially the first one. AND, in my opinion, the first movie is the best of all of them. Maybe he's looking at the film from a directors point of view, but the first movie was more related to the books than any of the others.

He's certainly got a lot to say! Well i do get his point, he shouldn't have to direct something if he feels his talents would be kind of... squashed.

I am not sure I would WANT a director that is THAT negative on others visions when they stayed as TRUE to the feel of the sorys as they could. (AFTER ALL the first two are NOT as dark as the rest of the series. AND that is very IMPORTANT to keep in mind)

First he slams the HP movie series (I agreed with everything though), then he says how great Alfonso was.
If only we could combine Chris Columbus' acurate to the books style to Alfonso Cuaron's artistic and very magical directing style, and then add some John Williams music (It just isn't magic without his music. PERIOD.) the HP movie series would be PERFECT! Oh well. I know that won't be happening any time soon. Besides, there are only two movies left.
Does anyone besides me see a HP movie re-makes in the future???

He's entitled to his opinion and he doesn't have to be nice. :-) He is a very talented and innovative director. I agree (not the terms he used) about the first two films. They were not very creative at all. Just spitting out the books but POA broke away from that and of the three is the best. He did not mention GOF which is interesting.

Can't say i agree with the guy!!!
The first 2 followed the books more closely and i loved them!!
Much better than the latter 2 which missed out whole sections and even characters!!!
I'm glad he was never asked to direct any of them, at least we would have a chance of at least getting one good HP film....!!!
I'm sorry but the films were ok, but nothing i was expecting, but i really liked the first 2, but again the latter 2 were a bit of a disappointment!!
