A sketch of the cover that was never used for the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban book by Cliff Wright is scheduled to go on sale this weekend for £8,500. Mr. Wright, who had input from JK in reference to the image of the hippogriff, was somewhat disappointed that this version of the cover didn’t make publication.
According to the article
:
The sketch shows Harry and his friend Hermione Granger on a hippogriff, a cross between a horse, lion and eagle. Mr. Wright said: "In some ways I prefer the sketch to what ended up on the cover. It's more dynamic: in the final version, the hippogriff is not moving quite so fast. JK Rowling herself faxed over an image of what she thought the hippogriff should look like."

Cool, it would be interesting to see what JKR's version of a hippogriff looked like.

Hmmmm... That would look good on the wall in my room, but I wouldn't give so much money for a sketch. Even if I actually had them.
The sketch is better than the cover of my book, but I don't know about the covers of the other editions. Anyway, the hippogriff looks good, but it's slightly big compared to Harry and Hermione.

I love that image, it's somewhat symbolic... I've read a lot about the hippogriff and there is a hidden meaning somewhere... :D

I don't know that it matters a whole lot. At least not to me consitering I don't remember what was on the cover of POA without going back and looking at it.

I loved that little view of what the sketch looked like and personally, I liked the sketch. I thought it was a better way of portraying what a hippogriff should look like and move like than what really made it on the cover.

That's a lot of money for a sketch, it really is. I like the other version of the cover better though.

I would have also preferred the sketch as the cover. The hippogriff is moving faster and just looks really cool. But I seriously doubt anyone would be willing to pay £8,500 for it.

This is similar to, but much better than, Mary GrandPre's American cover. She's gotten much better over the last few books but the PoA cover was her low point - I'll always think that illustration is terrible.
Meanwhile... a lion? This is a Hippogriff, not a gryphon.

This drawing of Buckbeak is very good. But I do love Mary Grand-Pre's artwork, including her Buckbeak. She's drawn the illustrations for the other HP books, so maybe I'm just used to seeing her stuff.
haha, where do they get a lion? Hippogriffs are a cross of a horse and an eagle.

That cover is ten times better than the one that ended up on the cover. I never realy liked it, the hippogriff just didn't look right. But that one is awesome and eye catching and the hippogriff looks real not just like some badly drawn bird.
