In an new interview
with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix director David Yates, he comments on filming the movie, working with Dan Radcliffe and what the movie is really about.
There's a really interesting principle at the heart of this story. The ministry is this bureaucratic authoritarian regime trying to impose a fundamental doctrine on this liberal wacky school. The ministry isn't very good at accepting the beauty of differences. Everything has to fit in a box, and if it doesn't fit, it must be removed. The wonderful thing this story tells kids is that it's OK to be different.
I'm having the time of my life. It's like being at filmmaking gym. You're working every single muscle as a storyteller. These films are full of comedy, adventure and a bit of thrills. It's terrific.
The Newsweek issue will be on sale next week. Thanks to Andrew for the tip.

Wow Yates' comments sound a lot like what's happening in the US with certain issues. A good example I've heard is the ending of the movie Happy Feet, the republicans don't like it b/c it teaches children to be aware of the environment and the destruction we do to it. I guess some republicans have been quoted as saying children should not be exposed to this line of thought. I have to say, it's ok to expose children to violence on TV on the news, and on TV shows, but not to make them aware of the environment and the impact that they will have on it? Come on let's get our priorities straight.

I read the interview given on newsweek on the link you folks provided, I liked it bunches. I think it is saying much about how some of the actors have grown, including Daniel which he mentions in the interview. It is a good interview.

I absolutely love how much detail and attention they give to making the films accurate representations of the books. Although they can't practically incorporate it all, and a great deal is left unsaid, they do a really excellent job of developing the characters and recognizing themes and connections within the Potterverse. I love hearing the directors' views on how it all works. Great insights.

I would expect the fifth film to be good, although I will wait with an open mind. However, considering how good the first two films were, i would welcome some more continuity and hope that David stays on to direct the sixth & seventh films too.

It's great that Yates completely understands the "unveiling" of the ministry in the 5th. He's definately thought hard and analyzed every aspect of the book and found a fantastic method of presenting it. What he said reminds me so much of what I'm doing in my history and Language and Composition classes; analyzing what happened and the literature written at that time. It puts everything together! I can't wait to see the movie -- it looks like Yates has done a fantastic job!

Whoa. Way to trivialize Harry Potter, there, Yates. Well, I hope the movie is a little more magical and fantastical than he makes it sound.

Ahh, like that's the only picture of David Yates that we ever see. What's up with that? Oh well, that's so unimportant. Wow, he sounds intelligent there - 'bureaucratic authoritarian regime.' Wow. I'm so excited about this one. It sounds more like he's actually trying to convey a message rather than just shooting a movie. I'm really excited, maybe he'll end up directing the rest!
