In an new interview
with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix director David Yates, he comments on filming the movie, working with Dan Radcliffe and what the movie is really about.
There's a really interesting principle at the heart of this story. The ministry is this bureaucratic authoritarian regime trying to impose a fundamental doctrine on this liberal wacky school. The ministry isn't very good at accepting the beauty of differences. Everything has to fit in a box, and if it doesn't fit, it must be removed. The wonderful thing this story tells kids is that it's OK to be different.
I'm having the time of my life. It's like being at filmmaking gym. You're working every single muscle as a storyteller. These films are full of comedy, adventure and a bit of thrills. It's terrific.
The Newsweek issue will be on sale next week. Thanks to Andrew for the tip.

Bossy Boots says:
I really liked David Yates' comment on rehearsing before filming a scene: "The most important thing on screen is the actors. If the performance isn't real, that million-dollar special-effects shot behind the actor doesn't count for anything." I like that a lot. And I say THANK YOU. It seems as though a lot of these big, epic films nowadays have pretty actors and actresses with no talent. They put some cool looking special effects in to cover it up and call it an epic masterpiece. What a load of bull! So, thank you Mr. Yates for having enough respect for the actors in HP to devote that kind of time. Thank you.

CharlieChop8 says:
well Yates is very bland when you first see him/hear him. however, the colour and flair shown in previous movies that he has directed/produced show that behind his odd hair cut and bland expressions there is a mind with its gears spinning rapidly, driving a mind that is capable of directing a good harry potter film. a mind that is rare, but once you find one spectacular...
anyway, cant wait for the movie!!!

Why does he talk about Dan only?! I hope he talked about the other young actors too! Especially Rupert and Emma. It wont hurt if he talked about Matthew Lewis, Bonnie Wright, Tom Felton and the twins :/

It appears, based on this article, that he understood the nature of the Order of the Phoenix perfectly; I hope his adaptation is as good as it sounds here in this interview. ^_^

It's good to hear he's getting a good "work-out" working on this film. However, his choice to call HP fans "kids" urks me.

That was a wonderful interview of David's. And I've read his comments about Dan - well, he praises him doesn't he?
I think Yates is a humble, quiet but creative director.
