In a year long battle to remove the Harry Potter books from the shelves of the Gwinnett Public Schools in Georgia, Laura Mallory, who has not read the books, may appeal the decision after it was announced
this morning that the books will stay on library bookshelves.
Ms. Mallory started
her crusade in November 2005 and with constant decisions and appeals her last avenue, in which she will be able to present testimony from experts, will be the Supreme Court. Ms. Mallory believes the books foster:
... murder and greed and violence. Why do they have to read them in school? If parents wanted to get these books, they could get them in bookstores.

How can you hate harry potter?!
Good job she lost though!!!
I doubt that even if she gets an appeal that it would go into her favour!
I think a lot of people agree that Harry is a really good role model....He always does the right thing (even if he gets into trouble and breaks a few rules to get there!), he doesn't bully poeple, you know the list can go one! hee hee hee!!

HOw can you challenge a book if you have never read it??? If I am concerned about what my children are reading or watching on TV I read the book or watch the program myself to determine if it is acceptable. I often tell them they have to wait for me to approve the book or program, but I never tell them no without checking into the situation!

I must agree with all these posts. I think that if she wants to waste her money go ahead. she is going to end up mad and broke. Harry Potter isn't evil or greedy, and she would be hard pressed to find a book for a teenager that doesn't have some voilence in it. Even if you don't personally like a book doesn't mean that it is bad. maybe she should do a little more reading and listening and a little less talking.

When is this idiot woman going to get that her battle is a losing one? Get over it.
"... murder and greed and violence. Why do they have to read them in school? If parents wanted to get these books, they could get them in bookstores."
Yes, and has she read any other books? It's always about popularity. Harry Potter is popular, thus more evil. I wish to write to this woman and say these things: "You need to know about A Series of Unfortunate Events, Artemis Fowl, and many more... All of these are guilty of the same things you claim HP is. Targeting the popular HP books vs. the less popular series I have mentioned is unfair. If you have not read the HP books (which you should, as while these things are present, so is love, friendship, and a great many other great values) then you shouldn't even be on this crusade. It does not give you creedance to your cause. And just as much as parents can buy their children these books, you can make sure your child does NOT read these books. It's called a two way street."
Some people need a serious life.

It takes a special kind of stupid to condemn something that you won't take the time to read. It fosters none of those things. The only way it would foster those terrible things is if there was something terribly wrong with the individual already... Her children will grow up resenting her if they don't already. If she doesn't want her children to read them and wants to keep the apron strings to tight the kids are turning blue, FINE, but don't infect the rest of the community/state/country/world with closed-mindedness, please. Grow up, woman...

Read the AP story and found this part very amusing.
"It's mainstreaming witchcraft in a subtle and deceptive manner, in a children-friendly format,"
From mainstream, what does she mean? Harry Potter maybe comparable with entertainment versions of witchcraft such as Charmed or The Craft but not actual Paganism or Wicca.
And she hasn't actually read the books? The stupid of the world unite!

Who is the woman? I may get an order for her to be restrained for the well being of the rest of the mankind. If shes so against it just send her children to a formost religious school that its the schools own policy not to stock it...lets face it children reading is a dying breed, so it may aswel be encouraged with amazing books like harry potter, i mean no 12 year old is goin to sit down and want to read pride and prejudice (which is also good just nto appealing to 12 year olds on the whole)
This woman needs help.

That's good to hear, it's ridiculous parents wish to ban Harry Potter from Libraries, if you don't want your children to read them, tell them not to read them. Don't take away the books so noone else's child can read them, God what a hypprocrite.

Could somebody PLEASE mail this woman a copy of John Granger's Looking for God in Harry Potter? Honestly? Is she just...dim witted? And, no, that is NOT intended as an insult for people who stick up for what they believe in. I am a faithful Christian who happens to LOVE the Harry Potter books, and I assure you that is not a contradictory statement. She LOOOOVES the Narnia series, which, because it has been announced by the author himself that it has Christian symbolism and the like...is more acceptable than HP. In an interview, J.K. Rowling has specifically hinted that she's hesitant to discuss her beliefs too openly lest anyone predict what will happen in the final book. (She is, by the way, a member of the Church of Scotland. Why the heck would she wish to indoctrinate children in Wiccan belief?)
She needs to at least read the books thoroughly and without bias (which would be impossible for her) before stating such ridiculous claims. (Her excuse was something along the lines of: "I don't have to read a porn magazine to know what sort of stuff it contains." What rubbish!)
I really want to start a "Christians for Harry Potter" club. Anyone want to join?
