According to a note
on the back of a marble bust at Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel which reads "JK Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room (652) on 11th Jan 2007."
According to hotel staff:
We couldn't believe it when we saw it.
We get celebrities in the Balmoral all the time and they often sign autographs for fans - but no one has left one behind on an ornament before.
Thanks to everyone who emailed.
UPDATE: According to a report from the BBC, the hotel has confirmed that Ms. Rowling did indeed sign the bust but will not say which room she stayed in.
A spokeswoman for the author said:
We can confirm JK Rowling did write some of the book at the Balmoral last month and did complete the book at that hotel.
UPDATE II: An additional report now states that the marble bust is being kept under lock and key in a safe place. According to the article from CBBC Newsround, JK is currently in the process of editing the book with the help of "someone from her publishers to see if any small alterations are needed before it's printed." Thanks Ryan.
In yet another story on this, the hotel states that the statue has been removed and is not Emperor Hadrian as first thought but the Greek god Hermes, the same name as Percy's owl.

I think this is very cool. I like that she finished it at a hotel. Come to think of it, having kids myself, I practically need to go to a hotel to read a book, much less actually write one. Makes her seem more "real" to me.

Wow that's really amazing. I would be overjoyed if I found something as that! So are they just going to keep whatever she signed locked up or something? How would anyone see it then? Oh well, I guess if they didn't lock it up someone would steal it. I can't believe the final book is done (other than the editing part)! July is gonna be such an exciting month!!! I'm actually pretty surprised that this one turned out to be true! It seemed a little far-fetched, the whole bust thing, but I don't put it past JKR to leave a mysterious note like that. I'm sure the hotel and room (if it is ever confirmed which room she was writing in) will be very hot tourist spots consindering it's where Harry's story ends! It is quite strange to think that she's done writing HP. I think we'll be getting many, many treats as she nears the publication date. Don't forget, as hard as it is for us to have the last book, think how hard it must be for her to come to terms with being finished with Harry's story!
