JK's writing

JK has finished writing 'Deathly Hallows' Popular (21060)

According to a noteopens in new window on the back of a marble bust at Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel which reads "JK Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room (652) on 11th Jan 2007."

According to hotel staff:

We couldn't believe it when we saw it.

We get celebrities in the Balmoral all the time and they often sign autographs for fans - but no one has left one behind on an ornament before.

Thanks to everyone who emailed.

UPDATE: According to a report from the BBC, the hotel has confirmedopens in new window that Ms. Rowling did indeed sign the bust but will not say which room she stayed in.

A spokeswoman for the author said:

We can confirm JK Rowling did write some of the book at the Balmoral last month and did complete the book at that hotel.

UPDATE II: An additional report now statesopens in new window that the marble bust is being kept under lock and key in a safe place. According to the article from CBBC Newsround, JK is currently in the process of editing the book with the help of "someone from her publishers to see if any small alterations are needed before it's printed." Thanks Ryan.

In yet another storyopens in new window on this, the hotel states that the statue has been removed and is not Emperor Hadrian as first thought but the Greek god Hermes, the same name as Percy's owl.

Excellent! That makes sense, since we've got the release date now.

Someone please explain. What does 652 mean? Is that how many pages it is? Or is that the room number? Confused...

This is not news, she has to finish the book no matter what...

But, to do this in a hotel room. This is ridiculos, why not do this at home. what is it that it had to be done or finished in a hotel? I don't believe that this is true, as much that she has made in the pass from rags to rich. Does not call for an ending the book in a hotel room...

That would be a huge coincidence if JK Rowling's hotel room was the number of pages in her book. Yet it would be very interesting!

Oh, to own that bust! (If it's true)..what a fantastic piece of literary history. I bet she was so happy to have finished her work on this series that she did do it. I think it was a neat thing to do and I am sure the hotel didn't mind. It was just ...a bust. ha ha ..

PhoenixandFire says:

This is pure style and class on JK Rowlings part, just imagine what she must have been feeling at that point in time. She had just finished something that has been a huge part of her life for so many years. Finally putting the pen down and realizing that it was done, complete, finished forever, never to write about harry again in a novel capacity. It must have been weird, surreal, bizar.

Signing her name on a statue of Hermes, I love it, it seems perfect. She has used so many historical references throughout the series, and putting it on the statue which holds the name of a messenger owl in her book, classy. I love it.

I feel so strange, knowing its done, knowing its over, now I wait until it truely will be over when I finally turn that last page....all I can do now is wait....

But I have another question, why was she staying at a hotel in edinburgh, she lives there does she not? She at least owns a home there. Curious...maybe she needed some quiet.

'Hermes is the god of shepherds, land travel, merchants, weights and measures, oratory, literature, athletics and thieves, and known for his cunning and shrewdness. Most importantly, he is the messenger of the gods.' encyclopedia Mythica.com
