Harry Potter book illustrator Mary GrandPré recently gave her thoughts
on the title of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and her feelings that the book is the last one in the series. She also discusses the process of illustrating the books and gives advice to illustrators.
Daniel: What do you think of the upcoming Harry Potter book's title, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?
Mary GrandPré: I don't know, I think it's just going to unfold as we all learn about what it means. I think it kind of leaves you wondering what this is about. I think it's intriguing; an intriguing title. I don't know what it means yet, and it sounds kind of scary. I don't know... I hope it means good things (laughs).
Daniel: What are your feelings and thoughts knowing that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the last book in the series that made you incredibly popular?
Mary GrandPré: I'm anxious for this to be the last book as much as I've enjoyed the journey. It's nice to kind of wrap it up and celebrate it as a whole and to just kind of look back and take a deep breath and go, "Whew! That was quite a ride!," so you know... I'm excited for it to end and to find out how it ends and yeah, I might be a little sad about it, but generally I'll be really happy that this check's closing and that I can kind of go on to other things personally and creatively. Yeah, so I'm happy about it, I'm happy that it has come to this point.

I'd haveto disagree with her. I really think that the ride died down after the 4th book. The fanfiction ride really picked up though.

This a very intersting question!! She'll must be really lucky if she gets to read it all before, so she can plan all the drawings!! I Just Love Mary GrandPre's HP art!! I can't belive this is the last we'll see and that she's happy it's over!!! I gues we all have mixed feeling about it.... I wish this wasn't the end though.... ::Sighs Sadly::

At first I wasn't too keen on them (although I didn't really dislike them either), but after studying them, you know, just sitting and staring at them and observing the style, I really really think they are wonderful. I would love to be able to pick one out and have a large print of it in color, framed. They're great!

Interesting comments from GrandPre.. but I think she must know more than she's saying, since she's making the cover. After all, there are always some plot elements revealed in the cover. JK Rowling probably told her something to guide her drawing!

Very cool. I'm glad she stuck it out and is going to illustrate all the books. I've really taken to using her drawings to see the characters in my head. Not so much the actors. I love them, but they aren't who I see when I read.

Such a mixed bag of feelings and concerns with the end of the HP series coming so soon. I personally, am sad about it. But I also understand as the artist for the books, it is just another book and there will always be books to illustrate.
