Earlier this morning the cover art for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was revealed on the 'Today Show.' Both Bloomsbury and Scholastic web sites have been updated with the art.
You can see the British covers here
and a large image of the adult version here
.
The cover illustration for thechildren's edition is by Jason Cockcroft, who drew the cover illustrations for the previous two Harry Potter books: Harry Potter and the Order of the PHoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The cover design for the adult edition is from a photograph by Michael Wildsmith, who has photographed all the adult edition jackets.
The inside flap of the British children's edition reads:
Harry has been burdened with a dark, dangerous and seemingly impossible task: that of locating and destroying Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes. Never has Harry felt so alone, or faced a future so full of shadows. But Harry must somehow find within himself the strength to complete the task he has been given. He must leave the warmth, safety, and companionship of The Burrow and follow without fear or hesitation the inexorable path laid out for him!
In this final, seventh installment of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling unveils in spectactular fashion the answers to the many questions that have been so eagerly awaited. The spellbinding, richly woven narrative, which plunges, twists and turns at a breathtaking pace, confirms the author as a mistress of storytelling, whose books will be read, reread and read again.
The back of the adult edition reads:
Harry is waiting in Privet Drive. The Order of the Phoenix is coming to escort him safely away without Voldemort and his supporters knowing if they can. But what will Harry do then? How can he fulfil the momentous and seemingly impossible task that Professor Dumbledore has left him with?
Scholastic has an interactive version of the cover here
.
According to Scholastic’s
Vice President and Creative Director, David Saylor (who has designed all the covers):
The front cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows features a dramatic sky of oranges and golds. It depicts 17-year-old Harry with arm outstretched, reaching upward. The structures around Harry show evident destruction and in the shadows behind him, we see outlines of other people.
For the first time the cover is a wrap-around. On the back cover spidery hands are outstretched towards Harry. Only when the book is opened does one see a powerful image of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, his glowing red eyes peering out from his hood.
You can view the reveal of the cover here
(Quicktime) or download here
(Windows Media, remember to right click & save target as ...). You can now also watch the video on the MSNBC web site
, thanks Hannah.
Canadian publishers, Raincoast Books, have updated
their web site with the artwork as well as options for pre-ordering the book.
You can see all the covers here
in our gallery.
UPDATE: CBBCNewsround reports
that the British version of Deathly Hallows will be 608 pages long, the second longest after Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

From what I've seen, these look to be the best covers of the whole series... on the UK children's edition, it looks like either Dobby or Kreacher is trying to grab Harry from behind, whilst holding the Gryffindor sword... wonder what that's about?!
My favourite is the US cover though...

Here are my thoughts on the US version: Harry and Voldemort seem to be standing in some sort of colosseum or something. There is an orange sky above as though it were twilight, and shadowy figures in the background that seem to be standing on ledges. Harry is reaching up for something and Voldemort seems to be going at Harry. By the way the background is painted and the way Voldemort seems bent on stopping Harry from getting whatever it is he is reaching for, I'm going to guess that there is someone above Harry and Voldemort just as the background shows the figures being above, and that this person has something which Harry needs and they're trying to get it to Harry. Based on my own beliefs, this person is SNAPE! Also, Harry IS wearing something around his neck, but if you use the interactive version on the Scholastic site, you'll see that what he's wearing around his neck is not a necklace or locket but what appears to be a bulky little bag tied off and then strung around his neck. Whatever this means, we do not know. But also of note is the fact that neither Harry nor Voldmort are holding wands. This would appear that they are battling without anymore Priori Incantatum. Meaning, they are using OTHER powers to try to defeat the other. This is interesting.
Comments on UK Children's version: this is a VERY strange image as it looks like the Trio have just exploded out of a stone doorway in Gringotts. There are bits of armor, lots of gold and jewels, other random objects, the Trio look pretty bruised up, and there is a house elf on Harry's back holding a sword up. Because Kreature is annoying and untrustworthy, I'm gonna guess that Dobby is along for the ride since he has such amazing powers.
Comment on UK Adult version: simple, easy to understand, clear - we have that bloody locket Dumbledore died trying to find. That's about it for that cover.
Put this all together and what do we have: Deathly Hallows means the Horcruxes, and that there is a deathly path for those who are going to find and destroy them. And as for the US version, I'm a little put off by the orange, I was hoping for black and some sort of nighttime battle or something, but what the bookcover suggests is a whole lot more than what you see on first glance!

In the US cover Harry is wearing a locket around his neck. Could this be the locket that the gang found in Order of the Phoenix? I think it looks good with Voldys red eyes and Harry in the middle of some destroyed place with a bunch of people around him. I cant wait to read this!!!!

WoW. I was expecting a lot more than that! *shrug* Maybe less is more. However, I know that a lot of us were hoping for Snape or the Order to be on the front, and I'm sure now that we know that they aren't, there is going to be much speculation as to who is going to die. JKR just loves to keep you guessing. :) Good job for Ms. Mary Granpre though!

I was eating breakfast, getting ready to leave for school this morning while my grandmother was watching the Today Show this morning. I heard them say something about Harry Potter, so thinking it just had to do with the movie, I walked in there, and just then they unveiled the cover, and I dropped my nearly full bowl of cereal on the floor. I couldn't believe it! However, I do have to admit, I was slightly disappointed. However, the other covers are abseloutely amazing. I am SURE that locket is the one they found in OotP, and I know for a fact that is "The Locket." I am just way stoked!

I noticed the amulet-type thing around Harry's neck, too. I wonder if it's a Horcrux or if it's some sort of protection thing?
Did anyone else notice that Dobby is hiding behind Harry with Gryffindor's sword on the UK kid's cover? Looks like we haven't seen the last of the Dob-ster.
Can't wait!

Oh my god...this is not happening. It's too soon! Rahh
So we have
-Slytherin's locket
-the trio with treasure/Hogwarts/Prongs (Harry's Patronus)
and
-Harry and Voldemort in a weird sort of space, reaching for something. What could it be? Surely not the final Horcrux? Oh my god...

Usually i like the British Versions better. However, I like the American Version better this time. Even though they both imply happy endings. The British version has riches and makes it seem like everything is going to be all right. While the American Version has a big colorful sky which also implies a happy ending.

My thoughts on the US version : First, I think it is the Hall with the viel that we saw in the MoM. If you look, the outer edges, there looks to be a curtain. Does Harry and Voldy go to the MoM? The room with the Viel is an ampatheater so its possible. The "sky" could be the viel inside the veil.... Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....

It is amazing! I really like the covers and this is the only cover we get to see Voldemort, so it makes it more interesting. And I noticed the collar on Harry's neck and on the adult's cover. It's probably Slytherin's and it's one of the Horcruxes, I suppose.
