Earlier this morning the cover art for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was revealed on the 'Today Show.' Both Bloomsbury and Scholastic web sites have been updated with the art.
You can see the British covers here
and a large image of the adult version here
.
The cover illustration for thechildren's edition is by Jason Cockcroft, who drew the cover illustrations for the previous two Harry Potter books: Harry Potter and the Order of the PHoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The cover design for the adult edition is from a photograph by Michael Wildsmith, who has photographed all the adult edition jackets.
The inside flap of the British children's edition reads:
Harry has been burdened with a dark, dangerous and seemingly impossible task: that of locating and destroying Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes. Never has Harry felt so alone, or faced a future so full of shadows. But Harry must somehow find within himself the strength to complete the task he has been given. He must leave the warmth, safety, and companionship of The Burrow and follow without fear or hesitation the inexorable path laid out for him!
In this final, seventh installment of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling unveils in spectactular fashion the answers to the many questions that have been so eagerly awaited. The spellbinding, richly woven narrative, which plunges, twists and turns at a breathtaking pace, confirms the author as a mistress of storytelling, whose books will be read, reread and read again.
The back of the adult edition reads:
Harry is waiting in Privet Drive. The Order of the Phoenix is coming to escort him safely away without Voldemort and his supporters knowing if they can. But what will Harry do then? How can he fulfil the momentous and seemingly impossible task that Professor Dumbledore has left him with?
Scholastic has an interactive version of the cover here
.
According to Scholastic’s
Vice President and Creative Director, David Saylor (who has designed all the covers):
The front cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows features a dramatic sky of oranges and golds. It depicts 17-year-old Harry with arm outstretched, reaching upward. The structures around Harry show evident destruction and in the shadows behind him, we see outlines of other people.
For the first time the cover is a wrap-around. On the back cover spidery hands are outstretched towards Harry. Only when the book is opened does one see a powerful image of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, his glowing red eyes peering out from his hood.
You can view the reveal of the cover here
(Quicktime) or download here
(Windows Media, remember to right click & save target as ...). You can now also watch the video on the MSNBC web site
, thanks Hannah.
Canadian publishers, Raincoast Books, have updated
their web site with the artwork as well as options for pre-ordering the book.
You can see all the covers here
in our gallery.
UPDATE: CBBCNewsround reports
that the British version of Deathly Hallows will be 608 pages long, the second longest after Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

I have been waiting anxiously for this day to come and I am now overflowing with delight. As I suspected, Mary Grandpre returned to the warm tones of the first three covers she did for the final installment. This cover, though not as revealing as, say, the Prisoner of Azkaban or Cahmber of Secrets covers about various plot details, it is still very fascinating. We cannot help but ask ourselves where this scene is taking place.
I can't wait for July 21st.

I am assuming that is the UK cover art. Our artwork in the US is usually a little different.

I am so excited about this. The cover looks great:) I didn't realize they made an adult version of the cover. I think I will buy the children's one. I have always loved the art on the books. Usually if you go back after you read the book there are some things on the cover that then make sense later. Very exciting. I can't wait until the book actually comes out:)

I wonder if that's Dobby or Kreacher behind Harry holding the Gryffindor sword?

Ok, if you examine the covers, harry and voldy are in the death room at the ministry, standing just before the vail.(you see that in the forground of the US cover) harry is also wearing the locket around his neck.
In the UK cover, you have Harry, Ron, and Hermione looking like they are being pulled through the archway, possibly, but if you look just behind Harry, you will see a house elf holding on to harry and Gryffindors sword?
Dobby to the rescue...

I love the Scholastic cover, but I'm not so sure about the British cover. I wish I could see a larger image of the British one because it's hard to make out the details of that one. I can tell that Ron and Hermione are on that cover with Harry which is a plus. The British cover looks very colorful too-which I like.

Wonderful covers. The U.S. version looks like Harry's in his last death throes or his heroic moment after he vanquishes You-Know-Who, but I could be wrong. (And is he wearing the fake Slytherin locket?)
The color for the U.S. cover art does seem a big odd -- orange? I expected it to be red or a darker color to match the tone in the final book. Maybe it's a different color to throw people off and make people think the trio will live. *shrugs*
The U.K. children's version looks cramped and much less exciting, while the adult version looks very understated and elegant. If I lived in the U.K., I'd get the adult version.

Sorry for the double post:
While examining the cover again I noticed that it featured curtains, as did the cover for the first book. Is it possible that these curtains signify, like a play, the beginning and end of the series? Just a random thought.

Ohhhhhhhhh! Wow! It looks nice, but...
Well, I thought the cover would be much darker, like grey, or dark red, or even black. I sure didn´t expect yellow..
But, now that I think about it... Yellow is a much more happy colour, and since this is the last book, that is a good thing.
