As first reported
by Deadline Hollywood Daily, advanced discussions are taking place for an elaborate Harry Potter-themed adventure park somewhere on Universal's Orlando property.
The Scotsman reported Sunday that a former executive revealed detailed plans of the project, worth an estimated $500 million:
Rowling is believed to have been in negotiations with Universal Studios since 2005 over potential sites and the park's contents. Earlier talks with Disney, which has a Disneyworld in Orlando, are understood to have fallen through because the giant American leisure corporation wanted total control of the project.
Indeed, Rowling's camp later denied a link with Disney.
UPDATE: While this rumor has existed in some form since as early as 2003, HPANA can now independently confirm that such a project is in discussions. Universal and Warner Bros. declined to comment, however JK Rowling's representatives confirmed to HPANA that the author has been in talks with Warner Bros. about a themed attraction for "several" years. There is nothing to announce officially at this point, however.

I would for surely like to go on one. $500 million is a lot of money though...makes me think how long Disney will have to keep the ride for to make a profit. But i guess....but what happens when the next movie comes out...or is it just like an overall ride?

That is definitely a park I would visit. I don't care much for Universal being a Disney girl, but I have been and for this I would definitely buy an annual pass.
I like the idea of a whole section of the park dedicated to Harry Potter, instead of one ride/attraction like they were talking about at Disney.

Yeah, I don't quite see this one either. It's a bit too much, really. As much as I love HP and have enjoyed my share of amusement parks....I'm just not hyped about the idea.

Makes perfect sense. I mean, how many other "themed" parks are out there, and none are all that wonderful. There's so much scope for awesome rides and displays with Harry Potter - the Hogwarts Express, the flying cars, quidditch, fighting dragons, etc. etc.
I wish Warner Bros Movie World here in Australia had better Harry Potter stuff - it was pathetic!

It just really sounds weird to me that the WB would sell the HP theme park rights to Universal Studios. Although its not impossible for the WB to do it-- if they see that they can't sustain both construction and maintenance costs, plus they don't have the experience and capacity that the Universal Studios already have with this kind of endeavor.

However i think it would be kind of unfair if they just opened one in America because it does originate in the UK, not to mention it would make it a lot harder for me to go there if it was just in America! hee hee

Well, if Universal Studios is talking to JKR "only" then this project becomes more possible. The theme park can be based directly on the books and not the movies (rights of which is owned by the WB) so the park can actually be a totally separate/independent deal.
