UK book chain Waterstone's announced
the Top 25 Books of the Past 25 years, as voted for by their customers, and the number one book on the list was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The announcement was made to celebrate the chains silver jubilee and the nominations were made by publishers, editors and agents.
Gerry Johnson, Managing Director of Waterstone's, unveiled the list yesterday and said:
When Waterstone's asked the publishing industry to tell us who they thought would be the great talents of our second quarter century, we received a wonderful and eclectic array of nominations covering all tastes and genres.
It was incredibly tough to choose just 25 of them, but I think our final list includes a sparkling selection of talent - these authors will be on the bestseller and the awards lists for years to come.
Rounding out the list were:
Time Traveler's Wife
Northern Lights
Birdsong
The Da Vinci Code
The Shadow of the Wind
Memoirs of a Geisha
The Secret History
Captain Corelli's Mandolin
The Curious Incident of the Dog
Handmaid's Tale
The Kite Runner
The Lovely Bones
A Prayer for Owen Meany
Colour of Magic
The Five People You Meet in Heaven
Magician
Life of Pi
Wild Swans
The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic
The Name of the Rose
Angela's Ashes
A Suitable Boy
Notes from a Small Island
Labyrinth

Well it's of no surprise to any of us? What other book has had such an impact on children and adults alike - especially with the addition of the movie franchise?!!
I didn't like "Angela's Ashes" though - WAY too depressing...

That's fantastic! I've read pretty much all of those books, give or take perhaps two or so, and PS was by far the one I enjoyed most. Though I do recommend reading The Handmaid's Tale - I read it first for my A Level English Literature course and it's a fantastic book, really interesting ideas. But anyway, that aside, I'm really glad PS made it to the top of this list - well done JK, and well done us for loving it so much!

It just proves how awesome Harry is, that publishers were part of the nominating board - the publishers obviously take their cue from us readers - the more we buy, the more they publish, and therefore the more successful the book is! and apologies for this double-posting malarkey, I always think up things AFTER I've posted my first comment...d'oh!

Dang. Tuesdays With Morrie belongs in there over The Five People You Meet in Heaven. And I'm sorry but where is The Things They Carried? I'm fairly certain that is a more acclaimed and influential novel than The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic!!!! No offense to fans but, well yeah.
