Scholastic
, the U.S. publishers of the Harry Potter books released this morning the exclusive deluxe edition artwork
for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
UPDATE: Hi-res image of box set now available!
According to the press release
:
In addition to the stunning wraparound cover illustration, the deluxe edition includes never-before-seen full color frontispiece art on special paper. There is also an "Illustration Showcase" insert that features near scale reproductions of Mary GrandPré's chapter openers. Additionally, the deluxe edition includes an exclusive bonus black-and-white illustration that appears at the end of the "Illustration Showcase". The custom-designed slipcase is foil stamped and contains a full-cloth case book that has been blind-stamped on the front and back cover with foil stamping on the spine. The book includes full-color endpapers featuring jacket art from the trade edition.
David Saylor, Vice President, Creative Director, Scholastic described the art as:
Set during a highly dramatic sunset, Harry, Hermione, and Ron--clothes in tatters--cling atop a flying dragon in this astonishing artwork created by Mary GrandPré for the deluxe edition. As mist creeps down towering hillsides to a village below, questions arise about where the trio is headed and what has led them to this spellbinding moment.
The deluxe edition
, with work done by Mary GrandPré and available on July 21, will be a total of 816 pages; the suggested retail price is $65.00 (currently $39 on Amazon.com
) and the print run will be 100,000 copies.

Wow!!! That is sick! The dragon looks pretty beat up like it was in some type of battle. Also the fact that all of the trio is present gives me some hope that they will all survive the battle. But I am prepared for one of their deaths to be honest.

I find the translations for these titles interesting. Revealing even. That seems to indicate the title is referring to the Horcruxes. If so, that would (I hope) mean Harry is definitely not a Horcrux. I would have to say he is no where old enough to be considered a relic.

No getting away from the fact that it is a lovely cover but,the price of the book will put it beyond the reach of a lot of the younger fans.
I`m sure the publishers have made many millions over the Harry Potter years, and really could have made the price of the book somewhat lower.

I can't wait to read this scene to see where they have been, what they are doing and where they are going.
I hadn't planned on the Deluxe edition, but I may just give in and buy it as well.

Wow, that is totally such good artwork! What if the dragon was Norbert, the one Hagrid used to have? What if it is already grown up and the trio are using it to fly?
I can't wait and scared to death when the DH book comes out.
Cheers!

I suppose that they look pretty good! I'm just so excited that just about everything looks good. I reckon some are upset while some are cheering but isn't that the way that it goes!

HPMommy says:
My question is where does the dragon come from? All the other illustrations have had nothing insugnificant in them. So this dragon is going to be a really important part of the story. So far we have only seen dragons as creatures to be feared, not creatures that could be tamed, ridden, or possibly come to the rescue. Maybe this is an animagus?

Ohh, I want this so badly. I aksed my cousin to pre-order it for me some time ago, but I don't think she did. I think she's pre-ordering it at a book store. I hope so. For the deluxe edition of HBP, I almost didn't even get a copy because it was the day it was released when my Uncle ordered one for me. I love that one so much, I'll never read it, but I love that I have it. I like those pages of art at the end too. Wow, this one sounds really good. I want it!

-the dragon could be Norbert..
-harry is wearing green while hermione and ron are wearing black robes (school robes?)
-and I have no clue what the village under them is...maybe where Tom Riddle grew up....
