Scholastic
, the U.S. publishers of the Harry Potter books released this morning the exclusive deluxe edition artwork
for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
UPDATE: Hi-res image of box set now available!
According to the press release
:
In addition to the stunning wraparound cover illustration, the deluxe edition includes never-before-seen full color frontispiece art on special paper. There is also an "Illustration Showcase" insert that features near scale reproductions of Mary GrandPré's chapter openers. Additionally, the deluxe edition includes an exclusive bonus black-and-white illustration that appears at the end of the "Illustration Showcase". The custom-designed slipcase is foil stamped and contains a full-cloth case book that has been blind-stamped on the front and back cover with foil stamping on the spine. The book includes full-color endpapers featuring jacket art from the trade edition.
David Saylor, Vice President, Creative Director, Scholastic described the art as:
Set during a highly dramatic sunset, Harry, Hermione, and Ron--clothes in tatters--cling atop a flying dragon in this astonishing artwork created by Mary GrandPré for the deluxe edition. As mist creeps down towering hillsides to a village below, questions arise about where the trio is headed and what has led them to this spellbinding moment.
The deluxe edition
, with work done by Mary GrandPré and available on July 21, will be a total of 816 pages; the suggested retail price is $65.00 (currently $39 on Amazon.com
) and the print run will be 100,000 copies.

GrandPre's artwork is amazing, I liked the close-up as well. The deluxe edition seems great especially with the illustration showcase and other features.

The cover looks really good. I wonder if the creature that Harry flies on is a testerol or a dragon.

I've never been particularly fond of the cover art, but it is nice to see that the entire series had a consistent look to it. One of the better covers.

I originally thought Norbert when I read the announcement, but then I saw the picture and it does seem a bit funny. Of course, I do think Norbert is still the better choice because he really never served much purpose in the first book. It would be like Rowling to make him the big surprise return thing. Especially as he may remember his "Mummy" (Hagrid). But yeah, all I can think of now is just how jealous Hagrid will feel after he learns The Trio were actually able to ride a dragon without the dragon trying to kill them.
Also, if you look, Ron and Hermione are in school robes, but Harry is wearing some strange yellow-ish thing. And Ron and Hermione's robes are very tattered, almost burnt. hehe. But anyhoo, I wonder what this scene is leading to and how they come to it. Boy am I getting SOOOOOOOOOO excited. I can't wait. But of course I'll be sad. I wrote an article in my university newspaper about the end of Harry Potter so yeah, I put some heart into it.

Wow, that is some really nice artwork, and it really does make me wonder where the Trio is coming from or headed to. I'm sure the book itself is lovely.

hermy<3ron16 am I missing something are you just describing the cover or is there some opal-eyed dragon Jo has mentioned? I really hope its Norbert...Okay something interesting...someone else touched on it,but barely. Hermione and Ron are wearing robes...SCHOOL ROBES, Hogwarts afterall? Also I don't think that's the lake as a few have said.
This is the best cover hands down of any potter edition anywhere. Not involved and telling, but just simply stunning.
I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

I think the artwork just gets better and better as the series goes along. Like others, I think that this edition is rather expensive and I'd rather just read the book.
I think that Jo intends to have the trio stick together and I think that this questions whether or not they go back to Hogwarts.

Hermione II says:
Wow! The theories should start heating up again, with this last cover finally revealed. I have to think the dragon is Norbert, but I am wondering about the second boy on his back. I think we can agree it's Harry and Hermione, and that they all look a little worse for wear, with all those cuts and scrapes, and their robes so torn up. Hmmm...

I agree with everyone who says they can't wait to read that scene, but I don't agree that I like the cover. I like the way the GoF and OotP covers looked. This looks far too much like the first three.

Oh my god! A dragon! I didn;t see that coming! That was a bit of a surprise! Hmmm... Wonder where they are going? Hmm... Godric's Hollow? Spinner's End? There is a big possibility that it is Norbert!

Canis Diris says:
What are the trio doing on a flying dragon? Could it be the dragon that Hagrig had during the first book? Maybe not, but who knows? Plus that Village below must be significant, maybe that is where they just came from?

You know in the picture Harry is wearing casual clothes and Ron and Hermione are wearing school robes, so maybe Harry really did not go back to Hogwarts after all.
