Scholastic
, the U.S. publishers of the Harry Potter books released this morning the exclusive deluxe edition artwork
for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
UPDATE: Hi-res image of box set now available!
According to the press release
:
In addition to the stunning wraparound cover illustration, the deluxe edition includes never-before-seen full color frontispiece art on special paper. There is also an "Illustration Showcase" insert that features near scale reproductions of Mary GrandPré's chapter openers. Additionally, the deluxe edition includes an exclusive bonus black-and-white illustration that appears at the end of the "Illustration Showcase". The custom-designed slipcase is foil stamped and contains a full-cloth case book that has been blind-stamped on the front and back cover with foil stamping on the spine. The book includes full-color endpapers featuring jacket art from the trade edition.
David Saylor, Vice President, Creative Director, Scholastic described the art as:
Set during a highly dramatic sunset, Harry, Hermione, and Ron--clothes in tatters--cling atop a flying dragon in this astonishing artwork created by Mary GrandPré for the deluxe edition. As mist creeps down towering hillsides to a village below, questions arise about where the trio is headed and what has led them to this spellbinding moment.
The deluxe edition
, with work done by Mary GrandPré and available on July 21, will be a total of 816 pages; the suggested retail price is $65.00 (currently $39 on Amazon.com
) and the print run will be 100,000 copies.

Degamo,
I agree! JKR is always mentioning things that seem unimportant, but then they become huge (like the Vanishing cabinet that shows up briefly in book 2 and 5, then has a huge part in book 6). I hope that is Norbert - if it is, I wonder how Harry, Ron and Hermione tame him? With a fluffy teddy bear? With Hagrid's help?
EEEK! I cannot wait for the book to come out!!

They are not necessarily heading anywhere; there is a strong possiblity, considering the state of their clothes, they are fleeing something or someone...

Do we think that could be "Norbert"? What cool art work. I am so glad I pre-ordered the deluxe version. This just makes even more excited for the book release. Just a little more than a month away!

Very interesting. Riding a dragon. I wonder if that means that there will be some alignment with different creatures. I guess we will know soon.

No I think that this is the Horntail Harry fought in his fourth year. You can see the horns on his tail. THIS SO AMAZING! I WANT THE BOOK TO COME OUT NOW!!

The Gray Cat says:
I'm not sure this is Norbert. The dragon looks really old (wings are tattered, eyes are cloudy) - Norbert would still be young.
Also, Ron and Hermione's robes are tattered as well, like they'd just been in a battle. Interesting.

Ok, now I'm sure I'll die by heart atack, I need a doctor, or maybe just the book.

Actually if you look closely the dragon has blue eyes that are looking back at the trio. Also on Jo's website in one of the special prizes it says that dragons are nearly full grown at one year. This book is a full seven years later. I compared the Norbert picture from book one, and they have a strong similarity. Even the tail is exactly the same.

My gosh they have flown on everything now. I wonder how they managed to get a dragon to let them ride it. This just leaves more intrigue. Glad the book is coming soonish now. Can't wait.

Does anyone else agree that this is the most exceptional cover that Mary Grandpre has ever created for this series? It is absolutely gorgeous: the sunset is beautiful and the lighting is wonderful. I must commend Mrs. Grandpre for a job well done.

Adnap Nottap says:
Harry is looking far too determined to be running away from something, or leaving a battle...Doesn't he sort of looking like he's getting ready for one? Odds are, they had to do a lot more stuff before seeing Voldemort, so it isn't too strange that their clothes are tattered. And I definitely agree that it's Norbert. I mean, ridgeback...it explains the spines on the tail.
I am SO excited for this book!

As much as I would love to see a return of Norbert; I don't think this is him. I read through the dragon descriptions in "Fantastic Beasts" and it sound like an Opaleye which is not as aggressive as other dragons.

I also think the dragon could be Norbert; it would be nice
to see him make a comeback in the very least. However, for
those who have read Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find
Them might note that the eyes resemble that of an
Antipodead Opaleye Dragon - Justa thought. Regarless, I
really like this cover!

Beautiful cover art! I do agree with anoyone who said that the dragon looks sort of old. It's hair is gray and there are small cracks in the horns also. Who knows, though?
This is so exciting! I can't wait for the new book!
P.S. If you want a closer look, put the magnifying glass over what you want to see, right click, and hit zoom.

No prominent ridges where Harry is sitting and Hermione is hanging on - I really don't think it's Norbert, who is a Norwegian Ridgeback.
An Opaleye sounds right. The scales do look a bit iridescent.
