JKR: Character in 'Phoenix' movie had to stay so he can appear in book 7 Popular (21243)

JUNE 25, 2007 at 5:27 PM

Posted by CHEESER
Source: MTV via The Leaky Cauldron

At the Harry Potter press conference on Saturday, producer David Heyman was tightlipped when responding to a question about whether a certain character was cut from Order of the Phoenix:

"Jo reads each draft," David Heyman had said. "She reads each screenplay, and she said, 'You know, I wouldn't do that if I were you. Or you can, but if you get to make a seventh film, you'll be tied in knots.'" "Which character was it?" the Boston Herald asked. "I thought you might ask that," Heyman teased. "I'm not going to say."

Well, director David Yates has now let slip to MTVopens in new window that it was... (Potential spoiler warning!)

"It was Kreacher, actually," director David Yates confirmed to MTV News on Sunday. "We took Kreacher out, and Jo said, 'Listen guys, you don't have to put Kreacher back, but I'm just telling you, if you want to kind of keep a thread going for six and seven, you might want Kreacher to come back.' She basically told us Kreacher plays a role in Seven, in a sense. She hinted. We thought about it for five seconds, and he came back."

What you won't see in the Kreacher scenes, however, is him squirreling away any artifacts such as, say, a mysterious locket no one can open. "Bad David!" Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry, teased his director about the locket's absence. "It was kind of tricky to raise that in our story, because it's for so much later," Yates said. “We figured we can probably introduce it later, and that’s the approach we took."

Can't believe they wanted to cut Kreacher, it's obvious he's important to the story, or is it not?

I wonder what Kreacher gets up to in book 7. It doesn't really surprise me that they tried to cut him from the movie, since they cut Dobby from GoF. I hope Dobby's in OotP too.

I really want to reveal the name, but I refuse to look! Man it's tempting though! I can sort of live with movie spoilers, because we all know what happens anyway, but I hate book spoilers of any kind!

Kreacher?! Wow. I had not been expecting that. I wonder how he's so important; of course, we won't know till July 21, but still, how interesting!

Hmm. I wonder if Yates was supposed to reveal that, or if JK is secretly angry at him right now...

Oh yeah, and as for my theory on what Kreacher's role will be in the last book:

I think Harry will convene with Hermione and Ron and one of them will remember the locket from Grimmauld Place and mention it. Harry will go back to Grimmauld Place to look for it but will only find Kreacher there bothering him. Harry will remember that Kreacher would gather things in his little cupboard and will request him to go get the locket. Kreacher will say that Mundungus took it when he stole from the house. Then Harry will pull out the fake locket and ask if Kreacher can go find Dung and get back a locket that looks like it, but is a Slytherin heirloom. Kreacher will look shocked that Harry is holding the fake locket and will as where he got it from. Harry will realize that Kreacher recognizes it and will question Kreacher, ultimately find out that he was there when it was placed in the cave. Harry will remember what Dumbledore said about needing two people to go inside the cave. For a little more added bonus, Kreacher will show a little cut on his hand where he had to provide his blood for entry to the cave. Harry will demand him to say who RAB is and Kreacher will say it is Master Black. Harry, dumb as always, will ask if he means Sirius, but Kreacher will cringe and say no, his brother Regulus, hence the R. Harry will ask why they went there. Kreacher will explain that he was forced to accompany Regulus who had once been a Death Eater, something his mother admired, but that he decided that Voldemort was cheating life and wanted to screw him over. Harry asks for Kreacher to tell him everything Regulus ever told him and everywhere they went and what they did -- the whole shebang. Perhaps Kreacher will end up providing some journal or personal something of Regulus' that explains what he knew. But point being, Kreacher will probably provide Harry with some other places to examine that were thought to have Horcruxes. So yes, he may end up taking Kreacher along with him and that could be him on the cover of DH. I would think Dobby is more trustworthy to take along, but if Kreacher has actually been to more places than just the cave, then there is a good chance that he knows more to help Harry out. I mean, how did Regulus ever come to know to go to the cave? There must be some process with which he came to the conclusion that the cave is somewhere to go. Perhaps he had other places to choose from that might make more sense to Harry.

MWbashfulAR says:

Also, I don't think Rowling is too angry with Yates. She knows that most people agree that Kreacher will be the one to get back the locket from Dung because it's the obvious answer. And also knowing that you need two people to enter the cave, she knows her readers are smart enough to guess that Kreacher went with RAB, whom she confirmed is Regulus. So I don't think she's angry that Yates confirmed that Kreacher has a story arch to complete in the seventh book.

Ah, that's what I thought. I was thinking about it, and I figured they might want to cut him out because he'd computer animated and it takes so much work to develop creatures on the computer and animate them. I wonder what made the character so important tho. I also guessed Frank Longbottom, but I guess he made it in. Or does he? We'll see next month!

That is really cool that JK Rowling told Warner Brothers too keep him in the movie but if he has a huge part in the book and is very importaint then I am going to be really upset that I had opened and read this. I just hope he is not very importaint, but apparenty he is. I am really glad that he will be in the last boom though beause he does seem kind of cool and I would like to learn a little bit more about him. I hope he is not big though.
