The first review
for the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie has crossed the wires. The movie premiere today in Tokyo and the reviewer gives the movie three out of five stars.
The chief problem, though, is not really a fault of the film but the near universal Potter-literacy of its prospective audience. Most Potter fans are now laser-focused on the release of the climactic seventh book in three weeks' time and its promise to bring together the countless loose ends.
This editor would like to point out that my rating for the movie would not be so low and we at HPANA will post our reviews on July 11th.
UPDATE: Yet other reviews here
and here
of the movie have appeared online, which are much more favorable than the one above.
UPDATE: II: Here is a review from The Hollywood Reporter
and one from The Sun
from the UK.

3/5? Well I suppose Harry Potter is an aquired taste. If you're not a fan then you're REALY going to like the film. If you try taking a friend who doesn't like HP to a film they always come out fairly bored. Well now I'm really excited! First reviews! Yes!

Critics don't know anything! Besides, that little bit in the review doesn't even make much sense. What factor does the final book pose to the quality of the movie? Doesn't the critic know that when reviewing a movie you are reviewing the quality of the movie and not what you think about the books and the fans? Hmmm, I am glad to here "this editor" rates it higher. I have full confidence in this film.

Don't forget people, now that we are on movie 5 I don't think David Yates or anybody gives a flying fig at what the critics think...
After 5 movies, they are doing these for the fans, as long as we are happy, that's all that matters... don't forget, we're the ones who are gonna still be watching this movie 10 years from now... not the crappy critics who've never read the books. If you like the potter movies and you've seen all five and you STILL haven't read the books... then something is wrong!
...also, what the heck does this guy mean when he says "furnature" ...?

I've found that people who don't like Harry Potter, really don't like Harry Potter. So maybe some of thos people really like Harry Potter, and some don't. But only 3/5?

I just can't understand rating down a movie because of exterior factors such as the release of a new book. I'm insulted by this.

Hear hear!!
At least someone mirrors my sentiment! I feel that too much emphasis within this review was placed upon how many Japanese fans were willing to greet Dan at the bloody airport!!!
That serves them right for pandering to Japan and ignoring the TRUE fan base in the UK ...
The movie will rock - this reviewer is just too focused on the iminent book release to see part his own nose!

I kind if have to agree with the trio's acting abilities,
they're not as developed as the book's version. However,
I still think this will be the best of the films yet. I'll
be sure to be my OWN critic.

Geez, this critic did not have many nice things to say about the film. I've got to question his critiquing style; I mean, he spent half of the article complaining about where the premiere was held. He should've also kept in mind that many of these people have never acted before in their life, give them a break! And as for the trio's acting, they hadn't really acted before Harry Potter, so as long as they progress they are being successful. What does he expect, after 4 performances, Oscar-winning material? It's supposed to be a dark film; this person obviously never read the books. I hope no one gets let down by this guy! I'm an actor, and I know what I'm talking about.

Don't jump on the reviewer, he's only trying to say that the film has to at least give a satisfying account of what's in the book, and it doesn't, not to him.
Just another reason why I dislike movies based on books...

Yea, So what if the film doesn't have what the others had. This guy didn't seem to have read the book or like HP at all. I think Stauntan is playing umbridge the way umbridge is supposed to be played.

You can't listen to the critics. They often seem to give crappy reviews (or so so) to great movies, and give awesome reviews to crappy movies. I would say a 3 out of 5 from this guy means we're getting a great movie.

frodozeppelinfreak says:
It isn't really a terrible review... His reasons for giving it the 3 out of five stars did not really reflect the actual film, he say "through no fault of its own" when he tries explaining what he means. He says the film is occasionaly spectacular, and most great movies are occasional spectacular. No film is completely perfect, and I am suer that this one will have some, if not many faults. I think the film's preview might have something to do with the critics expectations not being met. They marketed this film as an action adventure, much like GOF, and as every fan knows, OOTP contains probably the least amount of action out of the whole series except for HBP. I think that a "thinker" rather than a "thriller" is a good direction for Potter to go, but they have to market the film likewise or you'll get a crap load of pissy critics who are upset because "their expectations were not met".

Truly, though, when has a critic ever met the audiences expectations? They seem to take the opposite stance of whatever the general public believe.

The reviewer spent a whole paragraph whining about the fact that the world premiere was in TOKYO, and how Hollywood is pandering to the Japanese. I didn't read any MOVIE review. Sounds like someone skipped the movie and just "cobbled together" a quick something to appease his boss.
