Thanks to "the worst kind of Muggles" -- those who ruthlessly attempted to spoil the enjoyment of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on HPANA in 2005 -- we've implemented a comprehensive set of protection policies for Deathly Hallows, which are now live.
Unfortunately they are rather strict and cripple much of the site's functionality, but we would like to err on the side of caution rather than convenience. As such, members who joined after July 1st, 2007 or who have less than 100 points will not be able to post in HPANA's forums at all, effective immediately. External images and links have been disabled until after the book release, and the Wizard Wire Service on HPANA's home page has been temporarily removed.
We hope these and other minor changes will help ensure a spoiler-free experience on the site. Please don't hesitate to contact one of the moderators if you find something spoilery anywhere on the site.
Also note that any spoilers (scans of the book, chapter or plot summaries or elements) prior to its official release at 12:01 a.m. on July 21 will be removed and the poster's details, including IP address, will be forwarded to the Harry Potter publishers and JK Rowling's office. (Not to mention, banned from HPANA.)

I don't think it should matter how many points you have, just how recently you have joined. Just because we don't have tons of points doesn't mean we're going to put spoilers up. I understand that new members are likely to have fewer points, but why don't they just keep the May 31st thing and take away the points rule, because they're punishing people for not having time to get on here and post every day.

Sorry for posting again, but I didn't see the 48 hours thing until a second ago. I do thing that's a good idea, by then most HP fans will have the book finished and we can all talk about it without giving something away to someone who hasn't finished, because everyone will be done.

This sucks. I can't believe I have to stay away for the next few days, just because some people actually consider ruining it for others. Geeze.
Oh well, guess ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
See you when the book is out. :)

I'm so glad that hpana is taking such a tough stance against book spoilers. I already have my copy of book 7 ordered online and I won't be going anywhere near a computer until I've read it cover to cover. The type of people that think it's fun to post spoilers online do not deserve to be called fans at all. People like that should be completely banned from all Harry Potter related websites. I'm just glad to know that hpana is doing everything it can to rid the internet of spoilers.

I'm glad you guys are doing your best to prevent spoilers. A bit annoyed that the links and picture posting abilities were disabled however, but I can understand why I suppose. I definitely don't want to see any spoilers!

Thank you HPANA for putting these measures in. I feel confident in coming to the site even with the book's release so close. I am glad that I've been here long enough to keep posting in the forums.

Strict, yet necessary measures. We're only a few days from the release, and I don' t want the answer to all my questions right away. I hope the rules will be enough to prevent spoilers, and that no banning will actually happen. Thanks to the moderators for all that thorough work .

Nagini's Milk says:
I appreciate what you are trying to do, but when you think about it, it's kind of a waste of time. People who spend their time on the Harry Potter Automatic News Agregator the week before the book is released ought to know what we'll find here: all the news available about Harry Potter. The new restrictions have turned this into the Harry Potter Automatic News Eradicator, the place to go when you want to know nothing at all about Harry Potter.
So if you go banning people who let something slip, obliviating thousands of posts based on one error in judgment or, even worse, based on one mods misinterpretation . . . you're doing a disservice to your customers that make this site a success.
If you haven't thought about this, the way you conduct business the week before the final book comes out will largely determine how many people ever return here to discuss the series.
I think you have thought about this. You presume that if people read spoilers on HPANA, they'll be ticked off that you didn't do anything to stop it. But I disagree. They might be mad at the people who posted the spoilers. They'll be mad at themselves for their own curiosity. But they can't blame you for delivering the news and rumors. That is, after all, what an automatic news agregator does.
I applaud the fact that you want to do your job responsibly. By all means, prosecute the offenders who deliberately try to ruin everyone's fun. But . . . a few days before Book 7 is no time to turn into Joseph Stalin's house of censorship. Just tell people, Hey, if you don't want to read spoilers, don't go searching for them.

I think that's realy a good idea thanks to the web master. And I really like the last sentence (Please don't hesitate to contact one of the moderators if you find something spoilery anywhere on the site.)it looks like the Percy's warning to Ron in book 5 when he said to go see ombrage if anything is wrong.

I greatly appreciate the strong approach to spoilers that you are taking on this site. I would hate to get so close to the release of the book and then have it ruined because some idiot wanted to spoil it for everyone.
You have now made me feel that I can log on to my favourite site safely without fear of being spoiled. I hope other Potter sites take note and follows suit
Thanks HPANA - Not long to go now!!!!

Can I just ask why we, who have fewer points, are being punished.
I mean it's ok for all of you with over 100 points to say it's ok but imagine if you were in our position!
You wouldn't like it either! Would you? Be honest to yourself!
I want to know where I can complain!

Thomas Flitwick -- If you or anyone else has a problem with our spoiler protections you can certainly email me (geri@hpana.com) to discuss further but since you weren't around the time of the last release you have no idea what people do to spoil the books for fans & the reason for our steps.

It's kind of sad that we need all these rules, some people out there are just awful. And I'm sure there are plenty of new members or people who just don't post very often and have less than 100 posts who have no intentions of being a jerk, but I'm really glad that HPANA is playing it safe. I practically have nightmares of being spoilered.

Mrs. S. Snape says:
lorrin angel : As for being a true die hard fan...that's unfair. I work 70 - 90 hrs a week and this is the first time in years that I've had 'free time'. I choose to spend much of that free time here. It has nothing to do with 'die - hardedness'. If that's the crime than anyone who joined after the first year should be banned as really, if you were a true fan, you would have found this site right away.
And if you really wanted to get into it, I could ague that my points total on average (per week) is higher than many oldtimers...including yours, I believe.
