Is JK Rowling writing a crime novel? According to crime novelist Ian Rankin (a neighbor of Jo's) she is. Rankin told
a reporter at an Edinburgh literary festival that his wife had "spotted her writing in a cafe" and speculated whether she was "writing her Edinburgh detective novel."
UPDATE: Rankin has since said this was a joke perpetuated out of control by the press.

Sadly I do not think the encyclopedia will come for several years. It may take awhile for her to organize all her notes. On the upside at least we still have something HP to look forward too.

I love crime novels, and especially ones set in Edinburgh (I'm a big fan of Rankin's) and I think that if JK ever decided to write a crime novel it would be just fantastic. I mean, she managed to keep people hooked over a series of 7 books, imagine what she could do with a who-dunnit?

Sounds pretty suspicious to me. The guy obviously can't be much of a friend or else he wouldn't be telling things to the press without her permission. I have a hard time believing that JKR would tell anyone but close friends or family what she was working on. That he is a crime writer almost seems like he is trying to set something up. Or get more publicity by using her name to get his own name into the press.

Jo did say that for her next book, she wanted to steer clear of magic and wizards, but this is at the opposite side of the spectrum! Shouldn't she be working on her HP Encyclopedia anyway? Plus, didn't she say she wanted to take some time off right now, not having to work with deadlines and rushing to finish a book?
We'll just have to see what Jo says. Maybe her neighbor just wanted some publicity, a little gossiper if you ask me. If she is writing a detective novel, good luck to her, I think I'll read it.
